Dhal Thurim (DAAL FOO-rim)

Located within the central Frostridge Mountains, Dhal Thurim is the capital of the nation of Durfaehn. Having served as the seat of power for the first High King Thurim (for whom the city is named), as well as being the birthplace of the old Dwarven Empire, Dhal Thurim is greatly respected by the Dwarves as a place of great historical significance, and an integral element of the legacy they wish to leave behind. It's within the walls of this city where the High King/Queen of the Dwarves reigns, and where the course of Dwarvish history is most strongly influenced.

Demographics

The population of Dhal Thurim is predominantly made up of Dwarves, with very few members of other races living as permanent residents within the city. Among the cities population, the most common professions are smiths, artisans, and miners.

Government

The reigning High King rules over the city of Dhal Thurim. All taxes collected within the city are used to maintain it's infrastructure, particularly that tied to it's industrial sector.

Defences

Due to being built into the side of a large mountain, anyone attempting to attack Dhal Thurim would have great difficulty in approaching the city on foot, with the Great Bridge being the only route into the city. Additionally, there's a tall, solid stone wall surrounding the city, which can be manned with armed lookouts during times of conflict. In the event that the walls are breached, the majority of the cities defenders will be concentrated around the areas that lead to the higher levels of the city, and will also fire down on the invaders from the bridges and other elevated places.

Industry & Trade

Dhal Thurim trades extensively with the rest of Durfaehn, with the various precious stones and metals it mines being the cities most lucrative exports.

Infrastructure

Dhal Thurim has a number of forges and mines to support the cities industry, and is connected to other Dwarven settlements above and below ground through a network of stone roads. Additionally, due to the cities verticality (the result of being built into the side of a mountain), there are also a number of bridges and lifts connecting the taller structures.

Assets

Dhal Thurim has access to a number of mines in the surrounding area, as well as numerous forges and stoneworking stations.

Guilds and Factions

Council of Lords: Consisting of the heads of the Major Clans of Dwarvish society, the Council of Lords is one of the most powerful factions within the city of Dhal Thurim, and the kingdom of Durfaehn as a whole. Formed with the goal of ensuring the stability and prosperity of the Dwarvish people, the Council provides council to the ruling High King/Queen, and provides the clans with a means of settling disputes among themselves without resorting to outright conflict.

Points of interest

The Palace of the High King: Dominating the city of Dhal Thurim as its tallest structure, the Palace of the High King is the home and seat of power of the reigning High King/Queen of the Dwarves. It's here where the High King/Queen is crowned and rules over Durfaehn, as well as where the Council of Lords meet to provide council.

The Hall of Kings: Located adjacent to the High Kings Palace, the Hall of Kings is a large tomb that serves as the final resting place of the Dwarvish High Kings and Queens. With so many great monarchs interred here, including the first High King Thurim Arenak, the Hall of Kings considered to be a site of immense historical significance to the Dwarves, and is an integral part of their legacy.

The Great Bridge: A massive bridge connecting the front gate of Dhal Thurim to fortress-settlement of Khar Khelldar. Spanning the space between Mt. Gerdohr and the adjacent mountain, and with grand statues of past High Kings lining the sides and carved into the pillars, the Great Bridge is one of the most stunning works of Dwarven stonecraft, and a vital route between Dhal Thurim and the rest of Durfaehn.
