The Raid at Caftford Military Conflict in The Shard of Elan | World Anvil

The Raid at Caftford

Most citizens of Chrenada would argue that all Ryuven raids are unprovoked (the conflict is entirely over taking the goods which farmers and merchants have labored for, and victims point out they would be wholly unaware of the Ryuven in their own world if the Ryuven did not regularly attack) and unfair (humans feel at a disadvantage when facing flying opponents who wield magic, have unnatural healing abilities, and can escape into another world where humans cannot follow).   But there is a particular frustration which often arises when discussing Caftford. It was not a particularly great battle or an unusually severe one, but the timing of it made it a special point in the annals of the two species' conflict. Caftford was the first raid after the fall of the great shield erected to exclude the Ryuven raiders.   Allegations of treason and treachery flew fast after the shield's collapse, with rumors ranging from sabotage by The Gehrn to theft of The Shard of Elan (the crystalized ether which fueled and supported the shield) by Commander Shianan Becknam, Count of Bailaha to the idea that the shield itself had never existed (after all, who could see it?), but substantial evidence could not keep up with this talk. The events which followed are extensively documented* and so will not be repeated here. The irony is that even Caftford's previous raids had been unremarkable, disruptive to trade and certainly traumatic for its residents but hardly a turning point in history, and it was only unfortunate coincidence of timing which seized national outrage.   Interestingly, a recent statement has surfaced that one Ryuven complaint against the humans, outside of their coveting foodstuffs, is the theft of magic. Apparently one Ryuven has said that humans stole magic from the Ryuven, citing the humans' limited population of mages and their awkward use of the power. This is likely unjustified accusation meant to lend moral support to the perceived righteousness of Ryuven raids; it is no more unexpected that not every human can use magic than that not every human is a great artist or scholar, and clearly there has been no theft of magic from the Ryuven when they still have their magic.    *See Shard & Shield.
