Half-Fae Species in Scandagliare | World Anvil

Half-Fae

Creatures born from a homunculus and either a spriggan, saytr, or elvirr are considered "half-fae". This means a fae with the eyes of a homunculus and the ability to imprint features onto a fae form. Due to their infertility, they are incapable of sustaining a racial heritage of their own.   With no true society to call their own, most half-fae are inclined to form relationships with whoever they see as the closest to them. This may be family, a clan, or other half-fae peers. Like half-orcs, half-fae have an innate desire for community. As such, they will take on leadership or servitude roles just to have a sense of belonging.

Basic Information

Biological Traits

While most of their physical appearance and defining traits come from their fae ancestry, they acquire the "Imprinting" trait from their homunculus heritage. This gives them the ability to take on unique appearances.
Spriggans will be able to imprint skin-like features that spriggans do not have as well as have tree features exotic to their normal living area (so long as the half-fae has had time to imprint the feature they have seen). Satyrs can opt-out of having horns if they live in a society where there are not many satyrs.

Genetics and Reproduction

Half-fae are incapable of reproduction, which is one factor that establishes who they are as a species. Great amounts of effort have been put into research by both medical and magical academic communities alike to find a means to circumvent the problem with no successes to date. It is because of the half-fae's sterility that some races and individuals see them as "lesser", often referring to them as "mules" and enslaving them withing their own clans and households.

Dietary Needs and Habits

While many fae have dietary restrictions, half-fae may not acquire these allergies and intolerances and may be able to eat any meat, salt, or plant they desire.

Additional Information

Facial characteristics

Facial characteristics are inconsistent due to imprinting, though they traditionally are oriented towards their respective fae heritage. It is possible, for example, for a half-fae to have the ears and horns of an elvirr and the face of a slimmed-down dwarf if the half-fae imprinted that sort of facial structure.

Civilization and Culture

Naming Traditions

Half-fae do not have a particular naming tradition. They may take on a name similar to their fae ancestry, they may do the same with their homunculi ancestry as well. It comes down to who raises them and what environment they are raised in.
Sometimes when a Half-Fae has left the area they were raised, they may take on an entirely new identity. These names do have a tendency to be common tongue names for items of nature.
Males may take on names like Sage, Jasper, Branch, or Garland.
Females may take on names akin to Willow, Lily, Autumn, or Crystal.
However, this is a generalization. Half-fae may not take on a new identity at all until they have found a new home.

History

As homunculi made their way out into the world, they began to meet with the other races of the land. This sometimes would lead to more intimate relations. It was with surprise that childbearing would come from such a union as no other race is capable of such a thing. This is where the first half-races came from.
Since then, these races have unfortunately been seen as "lesser" among their peers due to their odd manner of existence and their inability to father or bear children. This has led to lifestyles revolved around servitude and discrimination. Those who are brave enough to leave on their own will do so in hopes of finding better lives in more accepting communities, though this can oftentimes lead to even worse situations.
There have been many attempts to create societies for the half-races but the success is quite limited with low populations and without the promise of new generations. However, this is not to say that efforts have stopped as the driving force for a great deal of the half-races is to find comradery and solutions for the problems they share.
The safe choice for most Half-Fae is to either stay in servitude to their fae community or to go join the local druid circle as a druid.

Interspecies Relations and Assumptions

Most singular race societies will see half-fae as "lesser" or want to use them for something unsavory. As such, their greatest relationships are with their own kinds, half-orcs, and homunculi. Some fae societies see them as true fae and they are cherished and loved as equals, but more traditional areas will not share that ideology. The other races may take note of them, but it all depends on what they hope to gain from the interaction. Most people want them for their beauty.

A half-fae's physique and attributes are predominately based on their fae heritage. Their bodies are generally slender with a possibility of features including plants, pointed ears and horns appearing depending on their fae parent's race. Their eyes will always have a singular color that glows from within the cornea, which is a clear identification of their homunculi heritage. This combined with their ability to imprint features creates a unique series of traits most races find very attractive.
