The Runic Houses

“There is something at work in my soul, which I do not understand.”

--The First Wielders of Gol

Tribes join together in 348 AB to escape the The Feast of Hell.
Golryon is built, all other cities destroyed in 355 AB.
Golryon expands, its explorers and children become Sofer, Dinlirys, Greenvale, and more.
In all of this, there are noble families which value their bloodline above all... until something more valuable is fished from the sea.   In 699 AB, the Darkwater Chest was dredged up from the depths of the Bay of Evandyr... and the world over changed dramatically. Lofus, the heir to House Stormborn, was the owner of the ship that first sent divers below to investigate the Darkwater. The cache of Charms, Void Ink, and Runic knowledge they returned with allowed Lofus Stormborn to take over his House, and soon after the city of Golryon wholly, through hostile takeover. The Magocracy that followed, and spread to Lofus' trusted allies in the family of the Hao's in Dinlirys, controlled all arcane magic through the Bay for a very long time.   The structure of the few noble houses that mattered changed. Instead of trying to beat and control one another, they all fought to please House Stormborn, and in return, the Duke of Golryon would give them Charms, or even Runic Tattoos that would make them Wielders (Sorcerers). Over a hundred years, the Ink and the Souls of the houses mixed, and children of these noble sorcerers would be more inclined and apt to learn the same magics as their ancestors, leading to arcane magic to proliferate of the types specialized in each house. House Kyndarai, for example, originally had humans and gnomes in their nobility, but as the generations went on, their tendency to favor the Runes of Law, Fabrication, Control, and the like, caused those Runes to resonate with them powerfully, and sometimes even show up on newly born babe's flesh, as black birthmarks.   When a Runic House is mentioned in Evandyr past 852 AB, it is no longer a familial lineage, there is little to do with racial or family borders. Instead, the Runes have mingled with the heritage of that house to make each house more apt for certain magics, and when enabled with the Runes, are much more powerful than similarly trained Wielders without that relation.   The Runic Affiliations and Houses are detailed below.
