Maplehood

Surviving in Maplehood is not an easy task, let alone growing up here. On top of the typical brainers, mutations, and cannibals roaming the land hoping to find some succulent human meat to devour, the very air here in Maplehood wants to disorient you and lead you into danger. You see, back when the world went to shit, the water in the nearby Get High Falls became hallucinogenic - and people wanting to escape the horrors of day to day life in the wasteland realized they could refine this hallucinogen using good old traditional drug manufacturing techniques. The drugs synthesized from this water are hundreds of times more potent than the water itself usually is, and can often lead to psychotic episodes and bursts of confidence, strength and endurance. Users report being unable to feel pain, along with the maniacal phrases such as “FEED ME YOUR SOUL, INSECT” and “SHE THIRSTS FOR YOUR FLESH JUICE”. If you find some junkie out in this forsaken desert, odds are they’re hopped up on Maplehood’s own produce.   The process of synthesizing these drugs has caused the already irradiated air of the Maplehood to become thick with purple, psychoactive smog. Venturing outside without a gas mask is practically a death sentence, as you’ll slowly start to lose your mind to the mist. There are plenty of people who do survive outside unaided, but they’re not really the friendly type. The only sane residents of Maplehood are the various gangs that are constantly at war with one another over control of the drug empire that has been founded here. Escapism is one of the most valuable commodities in this world, and whoever owns it lives like a king.   I was born into wealth here. My mother was a scientist for the ruling gang, and her job was to develop the formulas for refining and synthesizing new drugs. She was a genius, and she taught me everything I know. I understand exactly how this fog affects the mind, and how every drug produced in Maplehood hijacks its users body and turns them into mindless animals.   But her gang wasn’t in control forever. Some punks got the idea that they could run the empire better, and they provoked a revolt among the slaves in the production facilities. My mother threw gas grenades into the facility, and that’s when the bedlam really began. Blood spattered the entire factory, and everybody turned on each other. Brothers who had grown up in servitude together feasted on each other’s limbs. Gang leaders fired repeating rounds at anybody within eyeshot. My mother was sliced open by a one-eyed deranged slave. The cloud of smog in Maplehood turned red that day.   A new gang took control in the vacuum of power, and executed all the remaining old gang members by forcing them out into the smog without gas masks. I was one of them being executed for my familial ties to the gang. But I survived. When the rest of the crew went insane from the mist and started eating each other and screaming and laughing maniacally, I held my breath, and ran. I ran as fast and as far as I could. I ran until my cannibalistic comrades could no longer follow me. I don’t think I came out unphased, the drug certainly entered my bloodstream. I remember flying, and laughing, and coating myself in someone’s blood. It was delightful.   I do what I have to do to survive. I know you’re afraid of what’s going to happen next, because you won’t be surviving. You see, I need your blood to make an even more potent cocktail. I’m sorry I can’t sedate you, but your agony will make the substance even sweeter.

History

After everything went to hell, the weak suburban residents of Maplewood holed up in their houses. They were defenseless for the most part to the elements of chaos which moved in upon them. Cannibalized, kidnapped, or otherwise enslaved, the descendants of old Maplewood have become wretches forced to work in horrifying factory conditions to produce the hallucinogenic drugs so coveted throughout the wasteland. Those who took power became gang warlords fighting for control of the drug production in Maplehood. The wars between these gangs have destroyed most of the buildings throughout Maplehood, though some have survived through fortification into near castles for these gangs.

Geography

Smack in between the Char, Group 14621, Get High Falls, and the Psychic Maelstrom; Maplehood is fairly flat with the Genessee river flowing through the eastern border. The air has become completely polluted with a purple smog from the drug refineries.
