Gregory Navarro

(a.k.a. Greg)

Gregory Navarro is The News.

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

Gregory is a little underweight and underfed (see; everyone else), but he's doing great otherwise. Carrying around his portable radio station has built up some muscle and he makes it a priority to get a buzz cut every few months. The pink utility jump suit he wears and the blue baseball cap covers those features, so all the average waster sees is a hastily trimmed beard, broad shoulders, and his face.

Apparel & Accessories

Gregory's most recognizable piece of clothing is his pink utility jump suit. It covers everything from his ankles up to his chest and includes about a dozen different pockets. The sleeves and the collar are torn apart to just straps, revealing a well-kept white T-shirt. Other than this odd getup, Gregory wears a dark blue baseball cap and worn sneakers.   Gregory also carries with him his portable radio station. It's a bunch of old world electronics neatly stacked on top of each-other tied the skeleton of a hiking backpack. It's all neatly packed and manages to sneak in an antenna, a microphone, and a mixer into something that can be carried by one person. All it needs is a power source and it's good to go. The unfortunate downside is that it weighs a good 30 pounds and it can easily be tampered with.

Personal history

Gregory was born after the world went to shit and was brought up by Alaska in East Henry Etta's. He loved devouring the books that Alaska kept control over, but as Gregory started growing he realized that the books didn't mean anything to the outside world. Taking after his caregiver's tendencies, Gregory began poking his nose in places where he shouldn't have been and learned secrets about the two sisters that rule over East Henry Etta's. Wanting to spread the word but also not wanting to risk his adoptive mother's life, he fashioned a cheap broadcasting system and transmitted his message before heading West. The goodbye between him and Alaska was tearful, but Gregory reassured her that she had given him the skills to survive and do good in this world.   Traveling West, Gregory stumbled his way to IQ HQ. Although not bearing the birthmark of a native Westie, The Techs took him in when he proved he had a knack for electronics. While there, Gregory worked under the broadcast department for almost a year. Over that year, Gregory quickly became the head radio host on account of his stern voice and his aptitude for not mispronouncing code words and phrases. Gregory's tenure ended when the higher-up techies had decided to expand their research to other districts. Growing tired of the rigid structure and IQ HQ provided, Gregory volunteered himself for an expedition into the other districts. The decision to send Gregory out became finalized and he was sent out equipped with his portable radio station and Ricky, a junior techie that also knew how to brawl his way through a dozen people.   Form there, Gregory and Ricky started traveling North. They were able to sneak past the No Man's Land between West Henry Etta's and Wedgeward due to Gregory not having the Tiger birthmark. They made their way through the Western parts of Wedgeward easily, thanks in no small part to the business-like attitude that Gregory would whip out in a momen's notice. Making their way past Get High Falls was trickier. Even with gas masks that they acquired back in Wedgeward, Gregory and Ricky had to stay clear of the wandering hocus that controls the region. The omnipresent fog of the region also forced Gregory to cancel the radio program he had established after first leaving IQ HQ, which was definitely a bummer. However, that program continued once Gregory and Rick survived Get High Falls and made it to Maplehood.   Maplehood is where both Gregory and his assistant Ricky currently reside. That may change sooner than either Gregory or Ricky realize...

Personality Characteristics

Motivation

  • Learn more about the this new world. After reading so many books about the old world, he realized that he knows nothing about the world he lives in. Old world books might give insight, but they don't give experience or even grasp at what's going on right now.
  • Bring people the truth. Gregory knows that lies won't make this world better, even if they're convenient and liberating.
  • Find a safe, permanent home. Even when Gregory lived with Alaska, he experienced violence and threats. By scouring the wastelands, he hopes to find a place suitable to settle down.

Virtues & Personality perks

  • If Gregory is one thing, it's observant. He truly believes that if you stare at a person for long enough, you'll start to understand how they operate. Their habits, their quirks, and their personality will unravel themselves in due time.
  • Gregory is a firm believer in the truth. Part of that belief is his job; if he doesn't report what's real, then nobody believes him and Gregory becomes another waster. However, truth is what drives progress. If there is no truth, then everything in the Rocpocalypse will remain static, and he can't imagine a world where things don't get better.

Vices & Personality flaws

  • The inability to inhibit his curiosity. If Gregory gets word of something he's never heard about or is an aspect of the new world, he has a desperate need to figure it out.
  • Gregory commits himself to an oath of non-interference. In other words, Gregory doesn't do shit to warn other people. That especially holds true for potential takeovers and sabotage. Gregory is the messenger and his messages are what Choppers, Hocuses, and Hardholders do.

Social

Family Ties

Gregory Navarro is the adopted son of Alaska. The story she always taught him was that two waster parents got so wrapped up in arguing that they left their baby only a few blocks down the road from the East Henry Etta's library. Alaska intended to protect the baby until the parents came scrambling back, but that didn't happen. Seeing no other choice, Alaska decided to raise the baby herself, and that baby became Gregory.   Outside of his adopted mother, Gregory has no family. His original parents could still be out there, but he wouldn't recognize them and he would immediately be suspicious of such a bold claim.

Religious Views

Gregory is firmly atheistic. Everything happens for a reason, so giving Fate or a, "Higher Power," all the credit is straight-up bullshit. That's not how the world works and that will never change.   Gregory also knows that religion makes controlling the masses (and the message) easy. Need an excuse for people to give you food and water? Say that you're a savior. Even better; say you're the shepherd that will lead the people to their savior. Given the right situation, Gregory would use those exact excuses to get what he wants.

Social Aptitude

Gregory can't read lips or listen to minds, but he can tell when the local Chopper is completely oblivious and when the bar's Hardholder is fucking pissed but hiding it with a smile. Given his incredible gift of observation, he can only chisel away at such insights when he's actively trying to do just that. If he gets distracted by some rabble, his concentration breaks and any insights are lost along with it.

Mannerisms

Gregory has two modes of operation; the businessman and the steel striker.   When he has to be social, Gregory defaults to a businessman-like tone and set of manners. He's kind enough to get in the door, enough of a talker to strike up a dull conversation, and can pitch his services with ease. It's undoubtedly a bit odd to see a person in the apocalypse so eloquently composed, but those are the behaviors that lead to not pissing off anyone.   When left to his own thoughts, Gregory becomes the steel striker. He observes, records, and internalizes. His eyes dart from place to place, looking to catch every single detail that would escape the common waster. He might look crazy or unfocused, but the real trick is that he's being more sane than anyone else in the room.

Wealth & Financial state

Gregory doesn't keep many oddments on him. His business is information and he uses that information to keep himself from starving. That doesn't mean it's always booming, and Gregory is no stranger to hard times. He's had to sleep outside and eat rotting plants to get by. If things really turned sour he could sell off his portable radio station, but he'd rather use his teeth to grind bones before that happened.
