Martin Pohlmann was born into a noble family of Durian heritage, his family would be an influential house among those of the diplomatic courts in Duramir. This meant that when Martin came of age, he already had many connections not only within the royal court of Duramir but also within those of the Runic Empire, Torania and the Doric Duchies. Martin gathered impressive wealth due to patronage at various royal courts, he became widely known and renowned for his skill in prose and law, receiving perhaps his greatest windfall in the court of the Runic Emperor who sought his services in attempting to concentrate more power within the western provinces of the empire. It would be with this reputation that Martin would acquire land and titles, even in a greater proportion than he may have hoped for. Grand Duke Armas IV would grant Martin the title of Surcount of Siltala along with various minor lands in the region. The move was said to largely be because of Armas' infatuation with the Durian nobility, much like that of Grand Duke Tapani VII, but it also was likely due to the quiet nature of Martin, who Armas likely saw as an easy underling to bolster his authority at court against the usual cabal of easily disgruntled Surcounts.
Martin's role at the court of Grand Duke Armas IV would see him reprise his skills of law by being the primary point of contact for the First Officer of the Confederacy during their visits to receive draft legislature and payment of their allotted tolls and tariffs. Martin was known to exact his orders thoroughly, ensuring that such drafts were comprehensive and free of any loophole, in general helping enact the Grand Duchy's policy of mercantilism at his Grand Duke's behest. Through both domestic law and that of the confederacy, Martin sought to concentrate bullion in the Doric treasury and ensure the protection of various important goods within Doria through tariffs and restrictions on trade.
