Asjaer
Asjaer, capital of the Noble Republic of Aijia, is a grand walled city that lays upon the banks of the fork of the Bryn and Tora rivers. Due to this strategic location, the city has grown large and prosperous as a trading city that holds much sway over the merchant fleets that navigate the central kingdom’s two greatest rivers.
The city has its origins long ago when the modern lands of Alva and Ajia were one kingdom under the rule of one king. The king who had already settled in the north, on the bank of the Bryn, in his namesake settlement of Talaan, had sought to expand his influence to the more sparse and unruly southern reaches of his domain. His chosen place for his new stronghold was to be where the Jaer river met the Bryn, where he built a mighty palace that he named Asjaer - meaning “jewel on the Jaer” in the old Brynic language. The region of Aijia took its name from the palace, and although it’s meaning has been lost to many, means “land of jewels“.
Over time, the land of Aijia would be settled by wealthy migrants from the northern Brynic, Ardic and Durian tribes, resulting in a distinctly separate culture in the region from the rest of Alva. Asjaer was the epicentre of this new culture, the people and the architecture had grown grand and opulent, at a time thought to be the richest city in the entire Greater Bryn Valley due to its prime location and the flow of precious metals such as gold and silver from the mining settlements of Vollun and Mertan in the west.
