Shard Lieutenant

Liaison Officers

Overview

Shard Lieutenants are the lowest-ranking commissioned officers in Shardholm's formal navy and military, serving as liaisons between Central Command or the Naval High Command and the Sergeants that maintain their troops. They act as the right hand of Captains and Majors, assuring that soldiers follow their orders, observe established protocols, and adhere to proper etiquette. They ensure that the gears of military life continue to run smoothly on and off the battlefield. Their pay is modestly better than a Sergeants while their private quarters are considerably more extensive, and their provided meals have a noticeable uptick in quality. They are the first rank that allows officers to move their families into military complexes but may not take their families afield like higher-ranking officers. Lieutenants, though respected by most, are often considered the lapdogs of their commanding officers. Many mock them for their pompous dress and their blind servitude for their superiors without consideration for how the soldiers beneath them are affected.

Alongside their Corporal spear and Sergeant bar, Lieutenants wear a golden cord draped around their right shoulder and pinned with an ornate silver clip to their breast. The clip used to pin their cord is the shape of their service sigil: an anchor for the navy, a winged horse for the cavalry, or a pair of crossed swords the infantry. Their nickname: Gold Ropes is a derogatory term meant to imply these stuck up officers would only allow themselves to be hung by their fine golden cords. Their royal-blue officers uniform features the same silver trimming as a Sergeant's but comes alongside a set of beautiful white leather gloves, a durable blue field coat, and a dark blue bicorn hat. The same used to pin their cord is displayed proudly on the side of their hat as yet another method for identifying their rank and position within the larger military hierarchy.
