Shard Sergeant
The Heart of the Armed Forces
Overview
Shard Sergeants are the highest-ranking non-commissioned officers in Shardholm's formal navy and military. They have the most considerable amount of responsibility among officers as they serve as the lifeline between the ordinary soldiers and the either Central Command or the Naval High Command. Their chief duties lie in the administration of their soldiers, making sure to relay orders, compile requests, and ascertain their troops' state. They only have cursory involvement in their men's day-to-day affairs and rely heavily on their subordinate Corporals to maintain their troop's combat readiness. In their peacekeeping roles, a Sergeant's primary job is to review the police reports of their Corporals and determine if justice was served. They then compile all pertinent information on their assigned patrols to be sent off and archived at their relevant command office. They are well-respected members of the military hierarchy, and many consider them the heart of Shardholm's command structure. For their service, they receive private quarters housed within military complexes and are permitted extended leaves to be with their families in peace times. Alongside this, they are given a significant increase in their salary that allows them to comfortably support a family within Shardholm or its many tributaries.
A golden bar-shaped pin beneath their Corporal spear denotes a Shard Sergeants rank. Alongside this simple piece of polished gold comes a fine set of military dress similar to a Corporal's that must be worn and maintained at all times. It is composed of the same sharp royal-blue uniform and polished leather boots and belt but substitutes the bronze trim with silver to denote their higher rank at a glance.
