Shard Captain

Lesser Field Officers

Overview

Shard Captains are the primary commanding officers in Shardholm's formal navy and military. They are the lesser field officers in charge of day to day tactical and logistical affairs within their assigned Companies, Wings, or Ships. They make up the most important rung in Shardholm's military command structure and are ultimately responsible for the success or failure of their men. Captains suffer the highest amount of scrutiny of any officer and are held accountable and even made scapegoats when things go wrong. Their duties include compiling regular reports for their command office and acquiring the requested requisitions of their men. Their most notable and apparent responsibilities lie in their tactical role, where these officers formulate battlefield strategies and meticulous plans to carry out their orders. They serve their peacekeeping role by spearheading high profile cases and mitigating the impact of Shardholm's organized crime on the city. They rely heavily on their support staff of Lieutenants, Sergeants, and Corporals to keep the gears of civilization turning. They are the first rank of the armed forces allowed to live outside of a military complex and with their generous stipend, they can easily afford the small manors in Shardholm's famous High Residential district. Many Captains are apart of long-standing and flourishing noble families, that are well respected in the city.

Captains regalia includes their standard-issue royal-blue officers uniform trimmed with gold and sporting a long, navy blue officer's overcoat. In the hot and wet summer months, Captains may replace their overcoats with a waterproof shoulder cape emblazoned with the insignia of their service branch in black upon its dark navy surface. Their dark tricorn hat compliments the black, polished leather of their thigh-high boots and broad swordbelts. A braided gold and crimson-colored aiguilette joins their rank insignia, replacing their Lieutenant's cord and featuring three pronounced loops. In place of ornate clips, their braided cords end in decorative metal spearheads that hand freely from a dedicated shoulder loop. Their hats feature a large spearhead-shaped pin cast in gold and placed at the center of a blue and crimson cockade. Many captains choose to further accent their caps with vibrant plumage, a practice quite popular among the cavalry.
