Notris (NOE-tris)

Notris is a large city that borders a river to the west. The city is very influenced by the worship of Mother Nature and it heavily influences their political system. The city is built deep into the forest. In some areas where nature runs wild and merges with the city structure and architecture. It is common to see Tudor-style homes with large trees weaving in and outside the homes. At the edge of the river coast is the city's most notable feature, a massive white clock tower that is bisected in the middle and held aloft by a large jade gem that has greenery, vines, and arcane strands growing off of it. The same gem powers the druidic energy that keeps all of the winding streams that flow throughout the overgrown city above the ground by 15ft.   The city of Notris has stood for over 1,800 years. It has been conquered multiple times but the prevalence of the city was unable to be completely destroyed. This is except for the invasion of the Keldisian Kingdom. While the city has adopted many different cultures, languages, and governments, they have always stayed true to their worship of Mother Nature. She has always held the importance of the city and even the most egocentric conquerers understood that they were unable to shake her from the culture of Notris.
Due to this worship, Notris is now a theocracy and has been since the formation of the Court of Countillan. The leadership is held by two holy people elected by the priest of the city and outlying regions. They are referred to as the Blessed Twins. They have total control of Notris' government system but have to be unanimous in their decisions. There are also multiple commissions of 3 to 5 leaders that regulate smaller regions. The amount of people on this council is determined by the population and prevalence of the regions.
The current Blessed Twins are Divia Monet and Casious Senert. They have been serving together for the past 10 years and have allowed the city to economically soar and hold strong political power in Darleth and Countillan as a whole.
  • Divia Monet - She is an older tiefling woman with dark green skin and horns that twist like a goat's. She wears long tan nd green robes and adorns her outfits and skin with small sprouts and patches of moss. She has a kind demeanor and friendly eyes. She focuses the majority of her political power on the protection, preservation, and worship of the surrounding nature and the various deities that are often worshipped alongside Mother Nature.
  • Casious Senert - He is a middle-aged half-elf with curly blond hair and large round glasses. He often wears more modern styles of suits and dresses in warm autumnal colors. He is extremely intelligent and a strategist. While he is not always the most charismatic he makes up for it in the soundness of his plans. He receives the majority of the credit for Notris' economic success in recent years.
  Worship Regulation
After the split of Keldis and East Keldil in 6383, Notris began to worry about the possibility of a split considering their sizable population and land. They found that the most bonding aspect of their culture was the worship of Mother Nature. In response to not further dividing their people, they required the worship of her in every home. This is not to say that citizens are forbidden from worshiping other gods but that they must have an additional shrine to Mother Nature in their living spaces.
While this is how the worship regulations laws operated for just over 12 years, in 6403 the government cracked down on worshiping alternate gods. Citizens were only allowed to worship a specific list of gods with positive connotations. Additionally when in the main city of Notris, no other religious items or ideas are allowed to be openly expressed except for those of Mother Nature. For much of central Darleth, these laws became the expectations. The list of approved deities in Darleth is listed in its main article.   Catacombs
Underneath the city is a huge network of tunnels and catacombs. They were originally mines but after dead and ill were disposed of in the tunnels they were closed off for a very long time. The catacombs and victims of the Plague of Rattus were mostly forgotten as empires were built and destroyed over the land on top of the catacombs. About 900 years ago the catacombs were reopened and used as evacuation tunnels during the River Wars with the Keldisian Kingdom. However, a group of over 12,000 fleeing citizens went missing in the tunnels while evacuating. There are many rumors surrounding their disappearance. The most popular being that they turned into mole-like monstrosities or that they were eaten by monsters and aberrations of the Grove.
The catacombs are now blocked off and illegal to enter. Their tunnels are highly unstable and despite rumors, there have been records of monstrosities residing in the damp cave system.   Notable People from Notris   Last Edited By: Onyx
