Lyceum of the Dead

The Lyceum of the Dead is the vast cemetery that lies at the west side of Breughelland, and the open-air amphitheater at its center that hosts services for the dead.

Purpose / Function

The Lyceum of the Dead is the primary venue for Sarastran funeral services, and the final resting place for most faithful members of the Order of Sarastro. It is also where services for the Day of the Weighing are held.

History

The Lyceum of the Dead began as a simple town cemetery for the farming village of Breughelland, tended by the local monastery of Osiris. Once the Order of Sarastro took over the town in the 1060s, they began traveling from town to town throughout the Ossir Hills collecting the dead and promising to give them a free burial and a peaceful afterlife. Thus, the cemetery began to grow, and for a short period in the Y1080s the Lyceum held more bodies than the town of Breughelland itself.
The graveyard did not gain the title of the Lyceum of the Dead until the construction of the stage at its center, begun in Y1081 and completed in Y1083. For a time during the final construction of the Prime Sarastran Temple, the Lyceum stage was where daily prayers and weekly mass were both held.
The Lyceum of the Dead is also the venue from which Sarastro issued the Edict of the Eclipse, finished his interrupted wedding with Mescalina and his accompanying ritual of ascension, and was subsequently killed by Nekrotzar and the Battalion of Degenerates.
