Axel Hawthorne
Axel is the son of Julien Hawthorne and Elvira Laurëlin, born during their short-lived marriage. He was primarily raised by Julien and his sister Lida Rose Hawthorne until Julien's death in the Cave of the Banished Scholars. After that, he spent several years in Cantonova with his mother and the rest of the Laurëlin family. In his late teens, Lida Rose arranged his early admission to the Inventor's Institute and took him in full-time.
Axel is the only heir to the Hawthorne dynasty of inventors and artificers. He has proven himself a bright student at the Institute and a particular favorite of headmaster Tink Tinkerton.

Axel is a 10th-level spellcaster. He uses Intelligence as his spellcasting ability (+10 to hit, save DC 18). Axel has the following artificer spells prepared:
Cantrip (at will): light, magic stone, mending, thunderclap
1st level (4 slots): catapult, feather fall, grease, thunderwave
2nd level (3 slots): blur, heat metal
3rd level (2 slots): blink, haste
Evasion. When Axel is subjected to an effect that allows him to make a Dexterity saving throw to take only half damage, he instead takes no damage if he succeeds on the saving throw, and only half damage if he failed. Axel can't benefit from this feature while incapacitated.
Cunning Action. On his turn in combat, Axel can take the Dash, Disengage, Help, or Hide action as a bonus action. When Axel uses the Help action to aid an ally in attacking a creature, that target can be up to 30 feet away from him, and he can deal an extra 2d6 damage to it the next time he hits it with an attack roll before the end of the current turn. The extra damage is the same type of damage dealt by the attack.
Axel's Cool Boots. As a bonus action, Axel can teleport up to 15 feet to an unoccupied space he can see, as long as he has occupied that space at some point during the current turn. In addition, Axel's long jump and high jump distance are both doubled, and he ignores non-magical difficult terrain.
Blue Sparks. If Axel moves at least 10 ft. straight toward a target and then hits it with a Sparks attack on the same turn, the target takes an extra 1d8 force damage. If the target is a creature, it must succeed on a DC 18 CON save or be blinded.
Actions
Returning Wrench. Ranged Weapon Attack: +6, range 30/90 ft., one target. Hit: 10 (1d8+6) bludgeoning damage.
Sparks. Melee Weapon Attack: +10, range 10 ft., one target. Hit: 2d8 + 8 force damage.
Blast-Off! (Recharge 5-6) All creatures in a 15-foot cube centered on Axel must make a DC 18 CON save. On a failure, they take 3d12 thunder damage and are knocked backwards 5 feet. On a success, they take half as much damage and aren't moved. Axel flies 15 feet into the air and lands at the start of his next turn, in a space of his choice that was affected by this ability.
Reactions
Flash of Genius. When Axel or another creature he can see within 30 feet of you makes an ability check or a saving throw, he can use his reaction to add +4 to the roll. Axel can use this feature four times per long rest.
Arcane Echo. When Brad or Samuel casts thunderwave, Axel can use his reaction and a spell slot of at least first level to cast thunderwave at the same time. If the area of the spells overlap, a target in the overlapping area is affected only by the first spell cast.
