Raelas the Stalker

Raelas the Stalker was an elven ranger and a Marked of Yog. He was a player character in All Hail Yog, portrayed by Matthew Pitner.
“The ghost-white crow comes to flutteringly alight upon his shoulder, matching his complexion near perfectly. He is as ghastly pale as his familiar and his weapon – an exquisite longbow of elven make. Both he and the weapon, however, are traced with lines of corruption, veins of purplish black that betray how sickly and emaciated he is. Only his forehead is devoid of this corruption and there blazes a mark – a five-pointed star, glowing eldritch green. He is garbed as a huntsman, in torn leather and tattered pelt but your eye is drawn to the weapon at his side, sparkling in the dim light. Unless your eyes are quite mistaken, the knife is made from the pearlescent spiral of a unicorn’s horn.”

History

In his youth in the Wombwood, Raelas was smitten with a young elven maiden but she scorned him. After repeated attempts to catch her eyes, she gave him an ultimatum, meant to forever discourage him – “So long as Aeylar wears his horn, I shall never love you”. In a jealous rage, Raelas stalked and killed Aeylar the unicorn and gifted his beloved the horn. Instead, she was horrified by his crime and had him swiftly exiled from Cymbia. Shortly thereafter, the curse began to manifest. Racked by intense pain, he traveled the world, seeking a cure but found none.   Until Yog offered him a solution.   In exchange for his undying service, Yog would grant him a means to alleviate that pain. Only the murder of another creature can quiet his agony and thus, Raelas is forever indebted to Yog as a huntsman and hired bow. He works now as a poacher, slaying good-aligned creatures and selling their organs on the Yogothic black market as spell components.

Character

Personality

Raelas is a silent killer. It is unknown whether he chooses not to speak or whether the curse has in someway robbed him of his speech. Whatever the case may be, Raelas manages sto perform his duties to Yog without uttering a word. This makes him something of an enigma, even to his companions. Only via the ghostly familiar can Raelas truly communicate and even then, only limitedly. What he wants or what he thinks of his indenture, none know for certain.   It is clear, however, that he cares not for the money his killing brings him. All he wants is release from his torment, from the curse that afflicts him still. Killing is the only thing he feels anymore.

Abilities

Apart from his unsurpassed skill as a hunter and tracker of magical beasts, Raelas comes equipped with a number of deadly weapons and equipment to aid him in capturing his quarry. His primary weapon is his oathbow, a weapon that bears the same curse as its wielder, and that can impart that curse onto those it strikes. He carries Aeylar’s Bane, a dagger made from the horn of a unicorn that can drain the life essence of its victims. Around his shoulders he wears the cloak of the beast, which allows him to don an animalistic guise, such as that of a wolf or a panther.   What’s more, Yog gifted him a familiar, an arcane spirit that appears as any number of pale white creatures, from spiders to snakes to crow. The familiar is the poacher’s eyes and ears, capable of scouting nearly silently for its silent master.

Campaigns

All Hail Yog

  • The Ritual: In 898 4A, Raelas was among the four villains tasked with brokering an alliance with Hadar. In the middle of a mission to slay the treacherous Agnoment, Raelas was whisked away seconds before the kill and thus was denied his release. Appearing in the Houses of Enigma, it was Raelas – and his spidery familiar – that followed the Vessel of Yog deeper into the library and who received the Starsphere. After an awkward encounter with Ernst, Raelas bent all his research towards the Starsphere and its uses, discovering that whomever wielded the ancient astrolabe would become a font of Yog’s power on earth. Raelas was the primary aggressor during the attack on Witherby. Disguised as a pet warg, Raelas snuck up behind the politician, seized him, cut out his tongue and fed the undead bureaucrat straight into the waiting arms of Smuj. Raelas also took point during the unicorn hunt, planning the attack and feathering Sparkleshimmer from the treetops with his oathbow. He proved ineffective at taming the mammoth, however, and entrusted Smuj with that task. During the ritual, Raelas took a backseat, climbing the cracked ribs of Mount Masarthaga and surveying the scene from above. When Hadar made its grand entrance, Raelas was among those targeted, grappled by the slavering tongues more than once. He favored a threatening approach and suggested the party beat the Hungerer into submission. A few arrows from his oathbow, fired upward into the elder evil’s yawning mouth, proved more than enough to persuade Hadar into a parlay. During the negotiation, however, the silent Raelas was less useful, though he did suggest offering Hadar the Starsphere, something Smuj and Dr. Hughbert rejected out of hand. Upon returning to Ondûn, Raelas collected samples from Hadar’s vomit of the extraplanar creatures it devoured.
