Houses of Enigma

The Houses of Enigma were a library and repository of knowledge located in southern Yogoth. Here, scholars and sages came to study ancient texts and forbidden lore, seeking a means to strength Yog's dominance and destruction of the world.

Features

Constructed within a web-shrouded subterranean basilica, the precise location of the Houses remained unknown. Somewhere beneath the southwestern mountains, the only means of ingress to the Houses were via its Fissure and only Yog permitted those worthy to travel here. Beneath the central dome, its grand chamber was an arcade of twisting shelves, where Yog housed its accumulated supply of texts and tome, all vile and profane. In between these shelves were displayed the various minor artifacts Yog collected over the years.
The grand chamber was ringed by a circle of vaults, each with its own unique wards. Within these cells, Yog stored its most precious possessions.

Inhabitants

A number of creatures – all Yog’s servants – dwelled within the Houses.

• Spiders: Millions upon millions of spiders, from hundreds of species, called the Houses of Enigma home. They were the guardians and librarians of the place, tending the books and protecting them against any interlopers. Dwelling in the grand chamber, they draped the place in their webs and were ready to assist any who required aid – so long as they had the blessing of their mistress.
• Grand Librarian: A spider of truly prodigious size, the Grand Librarian was the master and mother of all the library’s lesser spiders. She was shy, preferring to delegate everyday tasks to her underlings and, though intelligent to a degree, did not communicate well with others.

Campaigns

All Hail Yog

• The Ritual: In 898 4A, Yog summoned Its four champions here, both to receive the Starsphere from the outer vaults and to permit them a chance to research the ritual they’d been tasked to perform. Once summoned, they wandered the library, guided by the Vessel, entered the obsidian vault and received both the Starsphere and their briefing. Once free to wander, they cased the place, seeking texts about Hadar, Mount Masarthaga and the ritual itself. Ernst even sought the Grand Librarian herself to ask about checking out the texts but had a less than productive conversation with her. With the Starsphere in tow, the villains returned to the Houses to tell Yog of the bargain they’ve struck with Hadar.
