The Rift
Created by The Sundering, The Rift is the most dominant geographical feature on the continent. Its very presence divides the continent into three separate land masses which helps to provide imperial boundaries and forge cultural divides larger than the chasm itself. At its narrowest points, it is only a few hundred feet across but its depth is believed to be several miles at its most shallow and the hearty explorers who have seen the bottom have reported that terrors abound.
Some entrepreneurial folks have been able to take advantage of the The Rift’s presence by accessing the rich mineral veins that were exposed when the earth split. Cave openings have been discovered on the sheer cliff faces and many who possess the means to explore these mines have been able to create incredibly lucrative, and dangerous, enterprises.
The Rift is also the reputed location of The Conclave. If it exists and remains somewhat intact it must be deep in the chasm somewhere between Mendhalia and Jos'Dalkar.
Geography
The Rift is a chasm, hundreds of miles long and plunging to unknown depths. It consists of sheer walls of a wide range of minerals. There are some settlements carved out of the walls themselves, these are only accessible from mine tunnels or flying ships.
Fauna & Flora
The depths of The Rift that have been explored contain a rich ecosystem of flora and fauna that are generally distinct from their counterparts on the surface. If anything, the species within the chasm is more closely linked to those that reside in the Underdark due to the general lack of sunlight. Rift Bats are one such example of a large, dangerous species, that thrives in The Rift, making holes in areas of the walls made of softer minerals that can be burrowed into.
Natural Resources
The creation of The Rift exposed large veins of valuable ores to the open air and new entrances to cave systems. Miners have spent centuries beginning to plumb the depths and exploit its richest but due to dangers and logistical challenges they have only begun to "scratch the surface."
