Salendite Species in Nimenra | World Anvil

Salendite

I have never met a Salendite before. From what I am told, they look like reptiles to some degree but they still do look like Nekur? I know Tatarus is widely different from the Demons but a reptilian-like too? I have to meet one before giving any conclusive answers about them. They seem to be a reclusive kind however so it might take some time before I meet one.

Salendites are a Necur sub-species that have the characteristics of reptiles, notably having scales that cover their body instead of the leathery skin that Humans and Demons. They originate from Murky Shallows, or Aneglnagai as they natively call it, a large swampland in the southeastern Narzuvim. Few leave Nekuram to travel beyond Unsirgea and Fenhergea; thus, very few Humans have ever met one.

Apperance

Similar to Tatarus the Salendites look different from Necur and Humans. Salendites stand at similar heights to both, at 1,6 - 1,7 meters tall for both sexes. They tend to have an average body physique that can vary a lot between individuals, none tend to be overly large however and instead be slimed down. They all have a tail that grows to be around 40-50 centimetres long. They grow hair on top of their head but males don't grow any form of facial hair. Females develop breasts similar to other Necur and Humans.
The notable part about Salendites is their scales that grow along the arms, legs, chest and throat. These scales are very protactive as sharp objects can bounce off and "skim" the surface leaving little to no damage on them. This does not make them unable to be pierced by sharp objects as scales can still be penetrated by enough force, crushed by pressure or broken off. The scales are soft to the touch, forming unique patterns around the body with a range of different colours found amongst individuals; bright colours are mostly found in females while males tend to have darker or dulled-down colours in their scales.

Biology

Salendites eat and drink the same as Humans and Necur. Salendites can also eat most meat raw if they want to without the fear of becoming sick. With that said, Salendites still prefer prepared food before raw due to the risks of disease that still exist for them.
Salendite have a special gland in their throat that they are able to use to shoot out a projectile of saliva. This has been used in both combat and sports both at present and historically.
Unlike other sapient species the Salendites don't give birth to live children. Instead, the Salendite females carry the unborn child in an egg for the first seven months and then later give birth to it. The egg is taken care of by the female or family for about four to five weeks before it will hatch into a young Salendite newborn. Similar to the other species Salendite feed their newborn with milk produced by their breasts.
Necur and Salendite can produce offspring together. In most of these cases, the female will instead carry the child of the other species instead of a Salendite. The same goes for a male Salendite with another female. These children tend to develop scales on arms and legs like their one parent while other features remain with the other species. However, there are no known instances of children between a Tatarus and a Salendite.

Sub-species

Salendites are usually divided into two kinds, the Swamp-Salendites and the Water-plains Salandites. All of them are the same species with some differences in culture and appearance.
Swamp-Salendites have remained in the Murky Shallows. They live inside the large swamplands as farmers, hunters and survivors in larger settlements with equally large families. Their scales tend to have darker red, brown and greens in colouration with few having lighter variants. The Swamp-Salendites also are able to produce acidic variants of their spit.
Water-plains Salendites hails west of their native swamps. These migrated several hundreds of years ago to live along the vast river delta of Afonhainn. These have adopted a lifestyle of farming and fishing and live in smaller towns and villages alongside other Necur. Their family structure, compared to their brothers and sisters, is tighter but still large. Water-plains Salendites tend to have blue, green, white and red scales in various grades of colouration. Some are also able to heat up their special saliva glands when they use them and heat up the spit.

Playing as a Salendite

Salendites are well known in Nekuram but outside is as of yet very rare. Humans tend to be hostile or at the very least very suspicious towards the new Necur species that comes out of Nekuram, especially those who are dissimilar to themselves like the Salendite and Tatarus. Salendites are communal beings and get along with their close kin and friends but the historical tendency to stay in their homelands makes them unusual people to travel far away.
