Mmottukuu

"It's horrible in here!"
-Mott's reaction to being caught in Leh'ct's stinking cloud spell   Mmottukuu ("Mott") is a kuo-toa loyal to his people's traditional religion and Archpriest Strelmotarplgbliid. The Archpriest sent him on an important mission to retrieve an idol of their god, Gibbidubbus, to try and help sway the separatists away from their heretical path. Unfortunately, Mott got lost on his way to the old, abandoned temple and was bound up by giant spiders in the Silken Paths.   Luckily for Mott, he was rescued by the adventurers of the Thaig Expedition and became one of their first allies in the Underdark. They helped Mott retrieve the idol he had been searching for before letting him lead them to his home village, Glogdolp, where they also assisted with putting down the bloodthirsty religious separatist movement. When his new friends were offered use of a kuo-toa ship, the Grinning Widow, Mott came along as part of the kuo-toa crew.   Though not a fighter, Mott is resourceful and can often get his hands on things he wants or needs via his skills as a gambler. Mott claims his largely expressionless kuo-toa face makes it nigh impossible for others to read him, though he seems to have a fair amount of good old fashioned luck as well.   Table of Contents

Journey Into the Underdark Arc

Meeting the Thaig Expedition

Luckily for Mott, he was rescued when "K" the Bugbear cut him loose, though he immediately tried to jump off the Silken Paths when he spotted Leh'ct while stating a quick death was preferable to being a drow prisoner. K was able to reassure him that Leh'ct meant no harm and Mott became immensely grateful for the rescue, giving the bugbear adventurer a Potion of Watchful Rest in thanks and bouncing up and down with joy. The bouncing turned out to be a bad move as his movements shook the webs and attracted several giant spiders.   His new adventurer friends were able to make quick work of the spiders (Mott helped by biting one of the arachnids) and bid Mott goodbye. Before they could leave, Mott clung to K and begged them to escort him back across the Silken Paths so he could get home. The group agreed and asked Mott to tell them about himself along the way. He told them of his village of Glogdolp and the growing hostilities between his leader, Archpriest Strelmotarplgbliid of the god Gibbidubbus, and the separatists lead by Nogah who worshipped some new (false, according to Mott) god called Saltora. He mentioned the Archpriest had sent him to recover an idol of Gibbidubbus to help sway those of wavering faith, but he'd gotten horribly lost on the way there. But he was confident he could get there now even though he'd lost his map.   Before Mott could explain more, he was interrupted when the adventurers were attacked by a group of hungry darkmantles. Eventually, they managed to kill and wound enough of them that the monstrosities dispersed and Mott suggested they rest at a place he knew nearby that was safe. So long as they didn't anger its guardian by trying to steal any treasure. He led them to a crumbling building guarded by a spectator who asked them if they were here to steal his treasure. When Jake F. Statefarm said no, it replied that was good because he was almost at his retirement. The group took an hour to rest up and bandage their wounds, at which point the spectator's 101 years of servitude expired and it floated off somewhere, allowing the adventurers to claim the treasure it had been guarding.

To the Temple

After the party managed to kill some rather monstrous spiders and get out of the Silken Paths, they let Mott lead them to the temple he'd been trying to find. Just as they discovered the entrance, a minor earthquake sealed the tunnel behind and in front of them. Seeing that nothing was getting through those rockslides but unknown dangers waited inside the temple, Mott volunteered to try and see if the rockslide could be safely excavated while everyone else explored the temple.   He was pleasantly surprised when they returned with the idol of Gibbidubbus, then unpleasantly surprised to see Biggs the Blob following the party. K managed to calm Mott down and convince him that Biggs wasn't going to eat anyone. Mott made sure to keep one eye on Biggs regardless as the group dug their way out and met back up with the rear party. With the idol in hand, Mott started leading the expedition towards his home village of Glogdolp.

The Battle of Glogdolp

As the Thaig Expedition approached Glogdolp, Mott suggested that a small number of them go forward to check out the situation there. He'd been gone for a month and was unsure how things had been going with the religious separatists in his absence. Accompanied by Leh'ct, Jake, and Elycia, their forward group was ambushed by separatists who wished to capture Mott's surfacer friends on the road outside the village. They were thankfully assisted by the timely arrival of Archpriest Strelmotarplgbliid and a group of his loyalist followers.   Mott happily informed the Archpriest that he'd successfully retrieved the idol of Gibbidubbus with the help of his new friends. He then let Archpriest Strelmotarplgbliid take the lead and accompanied the others into Glogdolp. While his surfacer friends helped the Archpriest deal with the separatist situation, Mott stayed in the bar the Archpriest initially led them to and had a few (in his own opinion) well deserved drinks. After the separatists were defeated, Archpriest Strelmotarplgbliid rewarded the adventurers by loaning them use of the Grinning Widow and instructed Mott to join them as main liaison between the surfacers and kuo-toa crew members.

Visit to the Deep Spire

Mott made sure to follow the orders of "Captain" Jake while on the Grinning Widow (believing Jake to be a ship's captain on account of Jake's tricorn Wraith's Hat). When the ship was attacked by duergar pirates, Mott was stabbed by one of the borders and quickly fled below deck while the adventurers handled the fighting. After a few more days of slightly rough sailing, the ship arrived at the Deep Spire.   While the Thaig Expedition members were doing their own thing, Mott took charge of the kuo-toa crew members. And he did what all good sailors do; took them to the nearest bar to keep them out of (relative) trouble. He wandered a bit in the days that followed, eventually ending back up on the Grinning Widow while Sunny was working on modifying a small boat. He asked what Sunny was doing and took Sunny's complicated explanation to just mean "magic". Sunny asked Mott to help him out by seeing if he could procure a map of the Black Loch. Mott said he'd ask the dockmaster and returned several hours later with a map, some money, and a pair of boots he'd "won off some guy". Sunny then sent Mott to go find Leh'ct and Elycia, needing to talk with them and knowing the little fishman would happily play messenger.   While he was fetching Leh'ct, Mott showed off his new boots and Leh'ct suggested they would fit better if Mott also wore a pair of socks. Leh'ct said he could help him find socks and took him shopping, which is how Mott was introduced to Gobo. He and the goblin merchant later went out drinking together where they bumped into Raddon, a duergar known for his persistent drunkenness around the Deep Spire. The duergar managed to convince the drunken pair it would be hilarious to fish the dead mind flayer out of the harbor, string it up, and charge people to use it like a piñata. While they were able to bribe their way past the Tideborne Tribe guard who saw them doing this, they were less lucky with the Sword Dancer who caught them when the cadavers arm fell out from under the tarp while they were carrying it upstairs. Though Raddon managed to run off with the body, Mott and Gobo wound up in the local jailhouse and Mott had to use most of his gambling money to pay his bail and fines.   Mott was later seen fishing off the side of the Grinning Widow with several other kuo-toa as the adventurers came back from the Ruins of Gyan'dis. He briefly spoke with a moody Leh'ct before K offered to take him and the rest of the crew drinking. Mott and the rest of the kuo-toa were later seen marching down the streets with K on their shoulders repeatedly chanting "King of Ale! King of Ale!" before spending a full evening drinking in a local tavern.

Parting from the Party

Mott and the rest of the Grinning Widow's crew later got the adventurers clear across the Black Loch and as close to the land route to Brazenthrone as they could by water, dropping them off at a tunnel that (probably) connected to the road. He also made sure that they officially declared him to be the new captain in their absence, though was unsuccessful in talking Jake into giving him his captain's hat (and grumbling about how Sunny had promised him a hat and never delivered on it).
