Gibbidubbus, Living Engine & Minor Deity

Gibbidubbus ("Gibby") is a newborn deity created when a group of kuo-toa began to worship a piece of the Venture's wreckage. Despite his youth, he possesses some knowledge from his time as a regular spelljammer engine and the people who were around him during that time. Namely Captain Reynolds, who he regards as his father. He is equally close to the more senior members of the Venture Boys, namely the late N64. Gibbidubbus is now eager to learn more about the world on sailing adventures in his human disguise, which usually involves him getting into antics after learnings things he probably shouldn't from sailors.   Table of Contents

History

Origin

When the original Venture was destroyed by the Argus Pirates, debris falling from the out-of-control airship scattered all across the Ashes Archipelago. The ship's magical engine landed not far from the ship itself, crashing onto a nearby island right in front of a group of kuo-toa. The fishmen began to worship the strange object as their new "sky god", the magic of their belief causing the engine's power to take a humanoid form around its casing and bringing it to life as the god they dubbed Gibbidubbus. Unable to speak their language and having all the worldly experience of a newborn, Gibbidubbus, unfortunately, found himself the cause of a religious war.   The kuo-toa were manipulated by the sea hag Mathilda Toestealer, who had infiltrated their society months ago looking for opportunities to commit acts of great evil. Starting a holy war satisfied her desires. She planted rumors, whispering in the right ears to divide the kuo-toa between worshippers of their old god and new worshippers of Gibbidubbus. Gibbidubbus did not entirely understand what was happening and gave the new high priest cleric magic in an attempt to appease him. Things when from bad to worse when the high priest sent some of his followers to attack nearby human villagers in the name of Gibbidubbus. It was only seeing them return that Gibbidubbus realized he'd need help to get out of this.   That help came in the form of the Venture Boys, who were looking for the attacking fishmen for the local villagers. They made their way through the kuo-toa settlement with a mixture of muscle and negotiation with the high priest ultimately challenging them to "face the great Gibbidubbus and have their unholy lives burned away by the Great One's holy glory". Jimmy entered the chamber and was greeted with a hug from Gibbidubbus, who recognized him and considered him a friend from their time on the Venture together.   The group quickly concocted a plan to resolve the kuo-toa's issues peacefully. N64 was declared the new high priest, having come at Gibbidubbus' will, and the old high priest's cleric magic was removed with a wave of Gibbidubbus' hand when he tried to protest. The kuo-toa were told that Gibbidubbus would now go out into the world to spread the holy word to others. With that, he happily joined the Venture II's crew as a powerful ally ready to help build their new ship.

On the Venture II

Gibby began to receive a basic education in sailing and shipbuilding from Captain Reynolds, taking in and applying what he learned very quickly. At the same time, he began to explore his magic abilities by creating a fishing rod that could pull fish from any body of water and a small bag that refilled itself with sand. When the Venture II was completed and engaged a pirate ship in battle, Gibby dubbed himself ship's pilot and spent most of the battle standing on Jimmy's step stool to spin the wheel. Shortly afterwards, he bonded his engine with the new ship and increased his magical powers. This allowed him to strengthen his bond with high priest N64, providing his warforged friend with some moderate magical protection.   When the group arrived in Aliisyos, Bakris kept Gibby entertained with a game of cards while the rest of the group sought medical aid for Jimmy. The next day, the group headed to the Queen of Stones festival for some R&R and Gibby quickly became determined to win a stuffed owlbear, dragging Althea around the carnival to help him. He did manage to win his prize, though only be using his magic to cheat when he the random prize selection nearly gave him something else. The next day, as the group was examining the trinkets they won, Gibby sneezed on the prizes while peppering his mashed potatoes and inadvertently turned them all magical, much to the party's surprise.   Gibby remained stuck on the ship with most of the crew while the Venture Boys investigated a murder in Hopewell Harbor. When his returning crewmembers were confronted by Mathayas and Arachnor on the docks next to the ship, Gibby could be seen leaning over the railing with his trusty slingshot in case the situation went south.

Magical Mischief

Gibby quickly took an interest in Captain Reynolds sharkdog Bruce when the captain brought his pet aboard. He showed a great love for the animal and an equal distain for seagulls after one pooped on him. He commanded his high priest N64 to kill the offending seagull and added "Death to seagulls!" to a parchment he labeled "Tenants of the Church of Gibby". He was later seen messing with inks and parchments in an effort to create magic items on purpose and was visible annoyed when the lurching ship caused him to spill ink onto himself.   When the cursed ship the Mourning Moon trapped the Venture II in an enchanted fog, Gibby boosted N28's holy powers to keep them safe while the Venture Boys cleared out the haunted ship. Once the curse was broken and the Mourning Moon began to break apart, Gibby absorbed the remnants of its power to learn how to make magical fog himself. His efforts to craft a magic item had apparently also been successful and he awarded Althea with a scroll of instant cookies after hearing about her heroism destroying the vampire pirate captain.   Gibby later attended a wizard-hosted swap meet with the Venture II's crew, quickly running off (much to N64's chagrin) as soon as he spotted a stall selling candy. The stall had a limit of 2 per customer which disappointed Gibby. When he later met up with Xaeyruudh, he had his doppelganger friend change forms and buy candy repeatedly (using his illusion magic to change Xaeyruudh's clothes) until Gibby had all the candy that could fit in his pockets. He also managed to get an unfinished magical potion spilled on himself during the events, giving him a case of the sniffles.   The day after the event, Gibby's sniffles had turned into a full blow cold. He sneezed frequently with every sneeze causing a magical effect. Bruce briefly turned into a great dane, Erica turned pink, Bakris suddenly found himself in the crow's next, Vinnie briefly switched places with Guu miles away, Althea grew rabbit ears & a tail, and N64 was briefly returned to his pre-warforged human self. Luckily, N64's docent was able to inform him of an incantation that could indirectly provide a cure. Vinnie said the magic words, "Klaatu, berata, nikto!" and summoned a sphinx that challenged the group to answer his riddles. They succeeded and were given a magic orb that could repair a magic item, using it to cure Gibby's ailment.

Defending his Birthplace

While the party was out on an adventure, the unattended Gibby gorged himself on his horde of candy and promptly gave himself a belly ache. The party returned to the ship to find him laying on the floor, groaning unhappily and surrounded by candy wrappers. He asked that they return to the kuo-toa village so that his fishy followers could pray away his tummy ache. The crew agreed a little R&R in a small fishing village might be nice after their latest adventure and set sail. They were two hours from arrival when they witnessed teleportation beams, falling Gunkers, and columns of black demonic smoke as yhe Argus Pirates attacked the peaceful island with everything they had.   While the regular ship's crew stayed on the Venture II to prepare the magic cannon, Gibby teleported the officers to the island to defend the villagers. He assisted Althea with getting people out of a burning building while the rest of the party focused on defeated the Gunkers running amok. When an immolith demon emerged from one of the fires, Gibby decided enough was a enough and used his full power to transform into his godly form. He was able to make quick work of the demon and the party converged on Mathayas, who was leading the attack against the village. Once he was defeated, Gibby went with Xaeyruudh and Captain Reynolds to secure the main road while the rest of their group cut through the forest hoping to get to the kuo-toa village faster.   Gibby and the others caught up to Vrak and his Gunker and demon minions on the road, dispatching them without too much trouble. Gibby himself finished off Vrak, using his giant-sized form to squish the man-sized bug as if he were a regular-sized bug. Their group pressed on to the entrance of the kuo-toa village, eliminating the Gunkers outside before going in to help the surviving villagers. Joining with the fishmen, they destroyed the invaders (including Arachnor, who was crushed by Gibby) before going back outside.   There they were approached by Althea and Bakris, the only members to survive the battle against Captain Elgar and return. As Bakris filled them in on the deaths of N64 and Erica, Gibby's tears were interrupted by N36 contacting the group and revealing himself as a warforged, with the intention to harvest N64's stolen body for parts. In that moment, Gibby vowed he would take the Venture II into the Astral Plane and hunt the wicked warforged down for this insult, whether or not any of his family chose to join him.
