Brazenthrone

Brazenthrone is a duergar city of hot and acrid air that is constantly polluted by the non-stop smelters that fuel the city's economy. Glares of the forges light the city at all hours of the day, made brighter when the dragon Yolheimsu'um makes his daily rounds to keep them burning hot. It is said that the armor and weapons forged here in dragonfire are among the best in the Underdark, giving Brazenthrone its nickname as the City of Blades.   While the duergar are not a people that most would consider friendly, they value trade and it is said that Brazenthrone lies at the core of many of the Underdark's oldest trade routes. That said, it is a place of potential danger for the unwary. Deepking Oghren Orzammar III's authority is absolute within Brazenthrone's walls and his Blade Guard soldiers patrol its streets constantly to enforce order, often invisibly using the duergar people's innate magical abilities.

Neighborhoods

Unlike most other settlements in the Underdark that take advantage of natural geography, Brazenthrone sits almost entirely in manmade (or in this case, dwarfmade) caves and tunnels. The city's construction is well planned and divided into neighborhoods each built for a specific purpose, with new construction constantly ongoing somewhere or another.

Notable Residents

  • Deepking Oghren Orzammar III - The current ruler of Brazenthrone who oversees his kingdom with an iron fist. He is an unpredictable person as skilled at politics as he is military matters, though how much of the latter is truly skill and how much is the insanity he seems to exude is somewhat debatable.
  • Yolheimsu'um - An adult red dragon whose fire keeps the forges of Brazenhome lit and ensures that the quality of their arms and armor is second to none. Served by a small sect of duergar, a group called the Bellows, who worship Tiamat, Queen of Evil Dragons over any of the traditional duergar gods.
  • Darmond Stouthead - The gatemaster who controls the way in and out of Brazenthrone by land.
  • Brannas Blackaxe - Commander of the Blade Guard who ensures King Orzammar III's rule remains enforced and unchallenged.
  • Galmin Firechains - The leader of the Bellows, a sect of the cult of Tiamat dedicated to serving Yolheimsu'um as her representative in Brazenthrone.
  • Jenlin Keenpast - The top merchant in Brazenthrone who is said to be able to acquire anything that can be found within the Underdark. It's rumored that she's never lost a caravan trekking the Underdark's caves and tunnels.
  • Baerdur Steeleye - The #2 merchant in Brazenthrone who bitterly wishes to take the #1 spot from Jenlin Keenpast.
  • Sradzar - A cleric of Skoraeus Stonebones and leader of the stone giant community in Brazenthrone. His people are bound to the city's defense by an ancient oath with the Orzammar family.
  • Diir - A derro criminal who smuggles things around Brazenthrone for the city's illicit elements, and is quite good at avoiding the Blade Guard.

Blacklung

The smog created by Brazenthrone's everlit forges causes blacklung in living, breathing creatures, resulting in regular coughing soon followed by the expulsion of thick, black phlegm. Whenever a living, breathing creature finishes a long rest in Brazenthrone, it must make a DC 11 Constitution saving throw. On each failed save, the creature gains one level of exhaustion as its airways become increasingly clogged. A creature that reaches level 6 exhaustion dies, as normal.   A creature with one or more levels of exhaustion brought on by blacklung must succeed on a Constitution check to take the Dash action. If the check fails, the action cannot be attempted. If the creature attempts to cast a spell with a verbal component, it must succeed on a Constitution check or be unable to complete the spell, causing the spell to fail with no effect. The DC for each check is 10 + the creature's current exhaustion level.   If a creature's exhaustion level drops below 1, it no longer suffers the effects of blacklung and becomes immune to it for the next week. Duergar and derro are inured to blacklung, making Constitution checks against it with advantage. Any spell or effect that cures disease also cures blacklung, removing all levels of exhaustion brought on by the affliction.
