The Mews Settlement in Necromancer's Moon | World Anvil

The Mews

The Mews sits west of the Libben, next to the Thieves Gate. During the early days of Hachenberg, The Mews was the stables for the western fortress that used to occupy Gatewatch. As the western military complex went into ruin, the stables became used by merchants and travellers needing their horses fed and watered. As the western side of the city declined, so did the state of The Mews. Still used mostly for horses, it now contains old warehouses and abandoned coach stations - which now act as ramshackled collecting points for cheap couriers.

Description

The Mews’ northwest edge backs onto the city wall, which is lined with dozens of stables, giving the Mews its distinctive equine musk. Other than stables there are large, rat-infested warehouses containing cheap bulk goods that are imported into the city over land. The rest of the area is taverns, brothels and housing for stagecoach drivers, couriers, grooms and ratters.

Demographics

The Mews is populated by the lower working classes, unskilled labourers, out-of-town folk with nowhere nicer to go and, of course, horses. Criminals are pervasive in The Mews due to all the large, mostly unoccupied buildings, easy access to the sewers, and a smell that prevents most Constabulary from tarrying. The upper echelons of The Mews are the building owners, whether it’s a tavern, warehouse or stable, they collectively own the majority of the wealth in the area, followed closely by various fagins who scoop up street urchins to set them off into a life of criminality.

Majority Influence

The Mews technically follows the laws of the land, set by the Grand Duke and enforced by the Constabulary. In reality, the building owners of the Mews are beholden to one of the two greater criminal gangs of the city, the Smythe Family and the Yun clan, paying protection money in exchange for being left alone.

Services

The Mews is the place to go to if you need somewhere to keep or rent a horse when you’re short on money. You won’t find the fastest or strongest of horses, but horses nonetheless. The Mews is also a notable location for cheap, watered-down ale or the new drug known as Steam. This area of the city also hosts black-market goods, cutthroats and prostitutes who are too desperate to let a brothel take a cut of their nightly earnings.
