Chapter 4, Session 12: Meet the Parents
General Summary
I do not know how and I do not know why, but Victor still dreams... and his dreams are always of you.Peregrine was present when Whispering Light woke up. She persuaded him to tell her what happened regarding the dream Sigholdt Sofiasson had seen earlier. Whisper spoke his truth: Whisper had wanted inspiration/fame in his youth/something to set him apart. He went to Inkbowl for a unique story. He went with companions and encountered horrors and whispers that drove them mad, forgetting each other and their own names (Whisper isn’t his original name). Inkbowl has a way of breaking people via the toll it takes: “You give something of yourself with every step”. When it was down to just him and one other companion, they found a creature speared to a wall, and both felt it whisper, turning them on each other. Whisper saw his ally as a terror and foe. When he killed him, a voice gave Whisper a story/the ability to see tales, inspiration and stories. He thought it was a gift, but he later learned it was stolen. Whisper took inspiration, vision and ability to make something, and fed thousands of stories to the Cirque Arcadia. Time has caught up and it is time to return what he stole. During the discussion with Peregrine, Whisper seemed colder and refused to help Stretched Ink in jail, suggesting it felt better not to have a possessed person wanting to kill him following him around. When Peregrine accused him of not caring for his family, he emphasised he didn’t have a family, he was alone and had to return what he took. He tried to warn Peregrine not to go to Inkbowl, though she insisted she had to. In response, he stated she would be the one to hurt and kill her friends (even when she said she had to go as resisting only hurt her friends). Eventually, the pair reached an impasse, and Peregrine agreed to leave if Whisper told her of his dream. Whisper revealed it was the same cog-dream Hermione saw in Peregrine’s memories, only the people on the cogs started to turn into Whisper. Peregrine parted by telling him she had got her memories back but refused to elaborate before leaving. Peregrine returned to her room and asked She Who Walks the Line/They Who Speak to the Rest for aid, only to get a knock on the door. The party had returned from their quest to The Shaded Scar, and a cleric had been sent to fetch her. She met the party at the temple and after exchanging stories, the group went to the Eye-Sly's Sand Speeders shop to cash in the loot they’d saved and get free upgrades. Eye-Sly told the party the special loot was Throne Glass and Celestial Steel from Thornden, and that this was the first trade deal between Thornden and Peridot. The party headed back to the tavern, and Hermione intimidated Peregrine to sleep after Peregrine asked her to detect her thoughts again. It was the same cog-dream, only all of the people were Whisper. Suddenly Hermione felt something pull her out of the dream, which had never happened before. Hermione headed down to bond with Timmle Whisp, the Peridotan tavern keep/Rune Child caster. Peregrine woke Sigholdt the next day to ask him about his mother. Sigholdt was a little reluctant with information. As Esmerae fed on Peregrine, Peregrine told the others about the dangers she’d learned about in the Inkbowl. Meanwhile, Sigholdt’s mother (Sofia the Waking Witness) arrived, meeting Hermione downstairs. Hermione instantly bonded over hating Peridot with her, before going to fetch everyone else. After putting on clothes for the first time in ages, Sigholdt went downstairs to meet his parents. In a hug, his mother whispered that the two could talk, but ‘she knows’. His mother is Sofia, his father is Thrudirim. After introductions, Sofia cast a spell and suddenly the party and Sigholdt’s parents were in a version of the bar with no other living creatures around. With this newfound privacy, the party debriefed the parents. Sofia mentioned she’d argued with Eva Sofiadottir about the trip, and she’d known what would happen, she’d seen Eve would die in flames. The party come to realise the person Sigohldt failed to protect was his sister, Eve. Sofia asked Sigholdt to come home, stating she was getting more and more visions and they were getting worse. She tried to persuade him that helping the party wouldn’t replace Eve. Sigholdt said he’d started to move past the grief and had accepted what had happened. Now, he has a new purpose, he is dedicated to his friends, and what is happening with them is a much bigger issue. Sofia told the party this would be the last and worst The Long Night and tried to tell them about Emperor Honour being a fake. The party then had to explain what they’d done with the real Emperor Honour, and Sigholdt also explained the situation with Hero and Crumble. Sofia asked Thrudirim to take a look at them, and he agreed to spar with Sigholdt, revealing he had his own Quori. As father and son went off to spar, Sofia agreed to help Hermione with Wraith, considered helping Peregrine and told Esmerae that Victor still dreamed every night, and every night he dreamed of Esmerae. The party learned Sofia had visions, explaining how she knew this. Meanwhile, Sigholdt stepped out, activating a new level of his cloak, and going to spar with his father. Thrudirim explained that Hero was dying, as the initial dream he was created from was changing with Sigholdt. His Quori no longer matched his dream. The pair discussed Eve and Sofia, with Thrudirim stating he had faith in Sigholdt, even if he chose to walk away from the Waking. Sigholdt asked what to do, and was given three options: 1. Return with his parents, where Hero and Crumble would reform but remain naive; 2. Let Hero and Crumble die, and find new powers/dreams; 3. Reforge Hero and Crumble at a Planar-Forge , with all the dangers that included. Sigholdt decided he didn’t want to return. Thrudirim told him that regardless of his choices, he would always be their son, and would always have them. For levity, Sigholdt showed off his gunblade. The party regrouped, and Sofia ended the privacy spell, agreeing to help cast Dream on Wraith. Everyone went to the prison with Sofia, except Sigholdt and Thrudirim who feat trained. As the party walked, Hermione gave Sofia Wraith’s information. Sofia apologised to Hermione about what had happened to her and Wraith with The Woven Providence. She offered Hermione two options: Hide, or fight until it’s clear they won’t win (war of attrition). The party entered the prison and set up for the Dream Spell.
