Shadows in the Harbor Session 38
General Summary
A Deal With A... Huh?
Fel'Shu and Malark had just finished hiding the bodies of the dead South Wind Trading Company members and had thus far successfully avoided detection by the rest of the cohort. Rather than press their luck, they decided that they'd take a break. Keck and Tim the Not-so-Tiny managed to just barely convince Ryder Stormwind, who had arrived while bodies were being hidden, to join in the effort against the South Wind. As a smaller company, he didn't have a whole lot to offer: up to seven men were currently at his disposal town. He brough up the concern of Deputy Valdin Hamming who, for all intents and purposes, may as well have been on the South Wind payroll. Keck blew off the concern, saying that they could handle him. Ryder brought up the concerns of Baron Rinan Oakwatcher, who was responsible for Fairshield and the surrounding area. Marcellus Blackforest countered that the Baron didn't care what they did so long as he received his cut. It would have to be enough. Ryder set off to collect his men; he told the party that they'd meet them at the South Wind's headquarters next door in an hour. Keck headed off into town and was immediately drawn in by a merchant under a tent. He had a number of knick knacks on his table, all seemingly nonsensical. Keck inquired if the merchant, who identified himself as Adsalor Sodrista, had anything that could provide an edge against Warforged. The merchant's eyes lit up as he reached behind the table and pulled out a bag of holding. His arm went in up to the shoulder and he seemed to searching for something. He pulled out a mighty lighting-charged sword! He looked at it quickly and before Keck could respond, Adsalor proclaimed that would never do and put it back in the bag. A brief look of disappointment came over the orc rogue. Adsalor reached around again in the bag, this time pulling out a map scroll. He presented it to Keck and Damakos, who looked it over closely. The map itself was ancient with borders and places that either no longer existed or had been faded from time. However, Damakos recognized the terrain features as the area south of the Dragon's Teeth Mountains in what is today known as the Winged Hills in the Duchy of Arrowport. A single town remained marked on the parchment in a language neither of them could discern, and yet it was familiar. Keck asked what was there and Adsalor simply replied with "the safety of life itself." That seemed to be enough for the pair of adventurers. Keck turned to retrieve a crate of fruit from the other side of the road for the merchant, only to find that he had vanished when he turned around. He and Damakos returned to the rest of the party.Charge!
About an hour had passed and the party had assembled themselves as well as the guards of the Merchant's Guild. They peaked over the fence and they could see that more than a dozen South Wind guards had assembled themselves in front of the headquarters. Apparently they had discovered the bodies of their men and were being addressed by their leader. Malark recognized him as Voren Thorne, an old associate from his time in Arrowport. All it took was an excuse, but they couldn't with that even. Fel'Shu launched the first attack, which was quickly followed by the rest of the party and the guards. Arrows flew, insults were levied, and bodies hit the floor. The fighting was brutal but quick. All the guards were slain by the forces of the South Wind, but even more of them had fallen. Voren Thorne and two others, including a mountain of a man, retreated to the inside of the headquarters. The party chose to lay siege to this den of scum and villainy. He's a What??
Fel'Shu charged in and punched out a window while Damakos cast magical darkness inside. At the same time the monk threw in a flaming torch; his penchant for fire came through in a pinch. It wasn't long before coughing and barking orders could be heard from the darkness. Tim and Damakos made their way around the back to ambush the South Wind as they attempted to flee. Soon Voren Thorne, the large man, and the thug came bursting through the door. Damakos shot his crossbow but missed. The massive guard charged at Tim while Voren and the other man attacked Damakos. The blood hunter would make swift work of the South Wind thug while Voren himself proved to be a bit more nimble. The mountain of a man, on the other hand, swung at Tim violently and tore into the fighter! Tim was losing blood rapidly and he knew he had to put down his attacker quickly or it would be his demise. He swung his greatsword, tearing at the man's face. Any normal person would've been down for the count. But the man turned to Tim, seemingly unphased by the attack, skin barely hanging on by a thread. Beneath it, though, Tim could see the glowing metallic eye of a Warforged. Tim didn't have time to process this new information before he began his furious attacks. He was soon joined by Fel'Shu who dropped an impressive amount of strikes against the malevolent construct. Soon, the light in its eyes were blinking out and the two warriors emerged victorious. Damakos was joined by Malark and Keck who were able to finish off Voren Thorne as he tried to escape. Digging through his pockets, Malark found a key on Voren's person that likely opened up one of the buildings in the immediate vicinity. With Warforged being able to take on the appearance of people, the party must come to terms with the fact that potentially anyone could be one. What they will do with this information is anyone's guess...Rewards Granted
