Session 51
Meanwhile, barely an hour earlier, Vigwalin decided to head back to The Fool's headquarters that Berga Dustbrook had lead them to that morning. He approached the door and quietly transformed into a spider to sneak in. Berga was alone and reading a book when he transformed back into his normal form. Berga jumped and chastised Vigwalin for his sudden appearance. After she calmed down, however, she told him that the rest of the Party had gone ahead to the keep by way of the sewer just a little while ago. The druid dashed out of the door to follow his friends.
He jumped down into the wretched waters, dark eyes staring at him from the darkness. He cast wild shape on himself, transforming himself into a rat to make use of the animal senses. As he began crawling through the muck and the mire, his keen animal senses picked up the still powerful scent of Bloodbane left in the sewer. He followed it for just over an hour until at last he arrived at a blown-open sewer opening, with bits of frost still melting all over the place.
As Vigwalin struggled to climb up in his rat form, he heard a tremendous boom come from the building to his north. The very ground shook and dust and loose stone fell off the keep as men dressed in black armor began running toward the disturbance with their weapons drawn. Vigwalin climbed up to the top of the parapet, transformed back his normal self, and hunched down so as not to be seen by the men. A moment later he summoned a mighty polar bear as his companion, but its massive size resulted in its being seen by the guards.
The guard called out to the polar bear who was attempting to hide. At the same time, as the guard began to scale the stairs, Bloodbane and Sir Didymus came running out of the keep. Typhon had turned into a giant ape, in preparation for the anticipated fight outside, while Jencerys Paren readied her crossbow. The other guards ran toward the half-orc and halfing.
As Vigwalin and his conjured polar bear attempted to fend off the rogue Sovereign's Shadow guard, he quickly cast confusion on the group of guards and the abjurer heading their way. The lot of them instantly stopped in their tracks looking dazed. The guard nearest him attacked the polar bear relentlessly; the bear's fur began to turn various shades of pink and red as long sword blows were dealt again and again. Sir Didymus, seeing his friend in trouble, ran up the stairs to his aid and attacked the guard from the other side. The bear collapsed into a lifeless heap and the guard turned his attention to the druid and the ranger immediately in his way.
Meanwhile, Typhon, in his giant ape form, burst forth from the confines of the keep, sending the door way flying off its hinges. He was immediately confronted by several rogue Sovereign's Shadow guards, taking multiple hits from their crossbows before they closed the distance to engage him in melee.
Jencerys, hid in the shadows of the keep entrance and took shots at the incoming guards, while Bloodbane began engaging the guards nearest him. Several critical hits left the barbarian severely injured, but he managed to pull through and keep the fight going.
