Sovereign Kingdom of Azuria

"Without our independence, the Azurian people shan't know peace. I will do everything in my power to drive off those damned Redbloods to bring us back to our beautifully idyllic way of life."   -Louis de Rochefort, first King Regnant of Azuria

Structure

As the Sovereign Kingdom is a constitutional monarchy, they adhere to the laws of the Azurian Magna Carta - a document that draws the limits of monarchical rule. Where the Vermilisian Supreme Monarch has absolute rule over his subjects, the King Regnant must adhere to these laws or be deposed by his own people.   Every few centuries, the noble house in power will abdicate the throne and the responsibilities of ruling Azuria. Since the Founding, there have been nine total houses who have held the seat. Most of them still hold vast amounts of wealth and power in their respective parts of the Kingdom, but only the House of Lavigne retains any control over monarchical duties.

History

In 9964 BM, the Supreme Monarch of Vermilius (a man named Tobias Charmant) would seek to expand Vermilisian influences and culture south beyond the Markéd Mountain Range. From the Vermilisian stronghold of Vauxvern, he deployed several military battalions to seize control of native land in what the Vermilisians called "the Sutherlands". The citizens of Vauxvern and Zanclea grew extremely distressed at this prospect, and incited the Mountain Schism - a revolution campaign that drew unprepared Vermilisian soldiers into the mountains for slaughter.   At the forefront of this conflict was the leader of the House of Rochefort, one of the oldest noble houses within the Azuria Landmass. Louis de Rochefort was a benevolent general who sought freedom for all south of the mountains, and spearheaded the revolt against the House of Charmant in 9969 BM.   It was during this era when the elven population of Vermilius decided to migrate south through the mountains and to the southern coast of Azuria, establishing the Geminiac Cities in 9971. They didn't provide much in the way of additional firepower, but rather fortified all major cities south of the mountains with their abjurative magicks. Many of these enchantments still remain today, particularly in the strongholds of Vauxvern and Sabbia D'oru.   In 9972, when the Schism looked as if it were coming to a close, Tobias Charmant went to visit the city of Vauxvern as an attempt at a peace offering. However, upon his arrival, he was captured by the House of Rochefort and summarily executed. This was the act that would declare Azuria a sovereign state, thus freeing those within the Azurian and Flavian Landmass to be united underneath the Azurian constitutional monarchy.   Naturally, Vermilius sought retaliation. In their desperate, weakened state, they would repeatedly attempt to invade the Sovereign Kingdom for the next five millennia - before realizing that this was a futile endeavor.   Approximately a century following the last Vermilisian attempt at invasion, the head of the House of Navarro - a woman named Alejandra Navarro, who served as a Zanclean judge within the Azurian legal system - travelled to Vauxvern. It was there she met with the current King Regnant (a man by the name of Simon Perrault) to discuss the peaceful separation of the Flavian Landmass from the Azurian Kingdom. As the Sovereign Kingdom still felt the aftereffects of the split from Vermilius, the King Regnant permitted this peaceful emancipation of Flavian territory.   On the first day of the next century (following the founding of Gallant), the Tri-Kingdoms signed the Triumvirate Resolution. This marked the beginning of the Tri-Kingdoms as they are currently recognized, and the shift in era from 'Before Monarchy' to 'Of Monarchy'.

Demography and Population

The Sovereign Kingdom's demographics are as follows:
  • 82% Human
  • 14% Elf
  • 3% Halfling
  • 1% others
All Azurian settlements are ethnically very homogenous, as halflings dislike leaving their homes and elves have developed disdain for outsiders in the last five centuries. Vauxvern is almost exclusively human, as are the outlying isles in the central Caligoloch. The southern Zocine Forest is extremely elven, and the halflings are concentrated in the northeastern region.

Religion

Azuria has no official state religion. The breakdown of worshippers are as follows:
  • Worship of Astaphaios is the predominant faith of the Kingdom, as Vauxvern is widely known for having the 'largest concentration of wizards on the continent'. However, at a mere 30% of the worshipping population following Astaphaios, she is by no means the sole deity represented.
  • Approximately 25% of practicing worshippers follow Maudaräe, as they are the foremost deity of elves. Although Azuria does not have the traditional bardic culture that Flaviae does, most elves worship them anyways.
  • 15% of worshippers follow Agatha, the goddess of agriculture and nature. Since she's the foremost halfling deity, it's no surprise that the majority of her followers are concentrated in Azuria.
  • 12% of worshippers follow the goddesses of the Stamen Trio, thus including them in the Order of Stamia. Worship of Lavenza - the goddess of death - has been made popular by the installation of the noble House of Lavigne onto the throne. Lyon Lavigne and his wife Gisèle are practicing followers of Lavenza, which earned them odd glances in their earliest days in power.
  • The rest of Azurian worshippers follow deities beyond the ones listed. However, practicing worship of minor deities like Homandos and Namtar were explicitly outlawed in the earliest days of Sovereignty, so no censused individuals openly follow these gods.

Agriculture & Industry

Marvellan wine country resides in northeastern Azuria, where wine grapes are extensively cultivated by the resident halfling population.   The majority of Marvelo's freshwater fish comes from the Caligoloch, a body of water that was blessed to forever supply Marvellans with its bounty.    A lot of artisanal goods are supplied from Castöru and Pollúxia, as the elven population has the time (thanks to their extended lifespans) to intricately craft and create.

Trade & Transport

Trade is complicated in the Tri-Kingdoms, mainly due to the nature of the Markéd Mountain Range.   All trade done between Azuria and the Imperial Kingdom of Vermilius is performed in the hub city of Gallant, as part of the Triumvirate Resolution states that no Azurian and no Vermilisian citizens are permitted to cross into the lands of the other Kingdom.    Azuria and the Magisterial Kingdom of Flaviae share an open border, so trade between those two Kingdoms is significantly easier.

Education

The Sovereign Kingdom is the most consistently educated of the Tri-Kingdoms, thanks to the infrastructure put in place by the very first House in power. They have the widest variety of offerings for higher education, with Gallatians and Flavians electing to study in Vauxvern rather than their own provincial universities.

The base form of currency is the Chroma, which is worth approximately $.83 USD when converted. There are forms of subcurrency; 20 Electra in a Chroma, 20 Cadmia in an Electra.
Major Imports
The major imports required by Azuria are timber (wood from the Zocine Forest loses its integrity outside of its region), grain (as only small communities on outlying isles of the Caligoloch have taken to cultivating rice and wheat), and metallurgy (as Azuria lacks the capacity to sustainably mine raw ore and the population of blacksmiths held by Vermilius).

Peace

Azuria and Flaviae have retained a peaceful diplomatic relationship, to the extent that their shared border is an open border. Despite Flaviae's separation from the Sovereign Kingdom in 14950 BM, it was a declaration of peace and goodwill to the Flavian people.

Non-aggression treaty

In thanks to the Triumvirate Resolution of 1 OM, Azuria and Vermilius no longer participate in direct conflict with one another. However, their relationship is extraordinarily tense from wars and imperialism several thousand years before, where the aftereffects still linger.
