Magisterial Kingdom of Flaviae

"Fear not, my brothers and sisters, for the Azurians have been gracious in freeing our great land. Now, in justice, we shall rise to become a vibrant land enviable by all who gaze upon our golden sands."   -Alejandra Navarro, in a speech given following the emancipation of Flaviae

Structure

The Magisterial Kingdom of Flaviae combines judicial rule with a theologically proven rendition of the concept 'divine right of kings'. The foremost deity of the Kingdom - Antiphon, god of orators - bestows a family the right to establish themselves as successors to the Ruling Magistrate for five generations at a time. When the final member of the fifth generation passes away or abdicates the throne, the eldest member of the successor family becomes the Ruling Magistrate. Families across the continent make a huge deal about this in the generations leading up to the shift, preparing their children through study of domestic and international law in the slim hope that their child will bring the family the kingdom's wealth.

Culture

Flaviae is by far the most artistic and avant-garde of the Tri-Kingdoms. Even though its general literacy rate is quite a bit lower than Azuria and Gallant, nearly everyone in the Orderbound is trained to some degree in one form of fine arts.   Higher education is very prominent in urban Flaviae, though the available fields of study are very limited. There are two paths an individual can choose from: law and art. Any individual within the Tri-Kingdoms who shows exceptional ability at oration, music, dance, or theatre will elect to attend one of Flaviae's many Bard Colleges rather than attend their kingdom's institution. Those who wish to pursue other paths - namely magick and theology - will study abroad in Vauxvern.

Assets

Flaviae has the lowest income per capita of the Tri-Kingdoms (including Gallant), but the Magisterial government attempts to serve its citizens in a way that benefits the general populace rather than a select few. Although Flaviae is (on paper) poorer than Vermilius, one wouldn't know it due to equity of income and housing in major settlements.

History

The Flavian Landmass was the first landmass migrated to by those born of Creation, as the original humans and dwarves were drawn to the warmth of the southeastern coasts. The modern city of Sabbia D'oru - historically referred to as the "valley of golden sands" - is the oldest continuously existing city in Marvelo. Population of the Landmass stems from the late first millennium.   Indigenous Flavians would coexist peacefully with the lands until the end of the ninth millennium, in which the Imperial Kingdom of Vermilius sought to expand southward beyond the Markéd Mountain Range. Soldiers began to march eastward out of the Vermilisian stronghold of Vauxvern, crossing treacherous terrain in order to seize Sabbia D'oru and the fledgling city of Zanclea.   At this point, the Flavian peoples decided to ally themselves with those that lived in the Azurian Landmass. The first noble houses came into existence in 9965 BM to congregate military forces in aiding the Mountain Schism, where Azurian and Flavian forces lured Vermilisian soldiers in for slaughter.   For the next five millennia, Flaviae would exist as a part of the Sovereign Kingdom of Azuria. They would be subject to rule from the capital city of Vauxvern, following the laws set by each noble house in power. The Flavians weren't treated poorly or outright oppressed, but their peoples were clearly considered an afterthought in the grand scheme of Azurian governing.   In 14949 BM, an indigenous Flavian who presided over the Zanclean judiciary system named Alejandra Navarro would receive a revelation from the god Antiphon. Antiphon told her that it was in her divine right to free her people from Azurian rule and lead them into a new age of justice and art, and that she needed to do so by garnering the support of the Flavian populace.

Alejandra gathered support and funds from her people to travel to Vauxvern in a diplomatic mission. It was there that she met with the current King Regnant - a man by the name of Simon Perrault - to discuss the possibility of emancipating the Flavian Landmass from Azurian rule. As the Sovereign Kingdom still felt the aftereffects of the split from Vermilius, the King Regnant permitted this peaceful emancipation of Flavian territory.   The Magisterial Constitution would be drafted and signed in the middle of 14950 BM, a little more than a century before the Triumvirate Resolution was signed by the rulers of the Tri-Kingdoms. These events marked the shift from the age of B.M. (Before Monarchy) to O.M. (Of Monarchy), and the Tri-Kingdoms would come into existence as we know them today.

Demography and Population

Flaviae's major settlements are less homogenous than both Vermilius and Azuria, mainly due to the lack of elves and the presence of indigenous cultures still thriving within the landmass.
  • 65% Human - mainly concentrated along the southern coasts, particularly in Zanclea and Puerta Alejandra.
  • 25% Dwarven - aside from Gallant, Flaviae has a significant number of dwarven descendants of refugees who fled Vermilius in the Cinnabar Period. Several villages amidst the Montuno Desert are entirely dwarven, as is a significant population in Sabbia D'oru.
  • 8% Gnomish - Marvelo's tiny population of gnomes is concentrated in the northern hills and coastline of Flaviae, spread out amongst several villages.
  • 2% others - all of Flaviae's elves, orcs, and halflings are either immigrants, refugees, or studying abroad.

Religion

Flaviae's state religion is worship of Antiphon, the god of oration and rhetoric. However, worship of Antiphon is by no means required - it's simply the dominant religion with tenets of his worship codified into law.
  • 80% of practicing Flavians follow tenets of Antiphon, whether in a secular or religious fashion.
  • 18% of practicing Flavians serve Maudaräe, the god of performing arts.
  • 2% of practicing Flavians follow other deities as their primary religion.
Flavians are often a bit more liberal in their worship than Azurians and Vermilisians, meaning that they're less beholden to following only one deity within the pantheon. Many Flavians worship three, four gods concurrently throughout their lives.

Peace

Azuria and Flaviae have retained a peaceful diplomatic relationship, to the extent that their shared border is an open border. Despite Flaviae's separation from the Sovereign Kingdom in 14950 BM, it was a declaration of peace and goodwill to the Flavian people.

Non-aggression treaty

Vermilius and Flaviae have always had a slightly strained relationship, but that was more due to Vermilius' acts of violence when Flaviae was still a part of the Sovereign Kingdom of Azuria.
