Matilda

Matilda is reputedly a sorceress with the power to change her shape. A lot of the laborers - dock workers, messengers, porters, etc. in Brillig seem to be in cahoots with her, possibly just as a survival strategy.
Matilda was later encountered by Narcissa in Reimar of Hegenburg, a town she seems to have taken over earlier. Matilda gave Narcissa shelter, and questioned her about her past. She did seem concerned about the presence of 'powers' (including 'Grandmother' and Boss Reinhard) in her vicinity, but evinced a desire to work with Narcissa, naming her her 'gardener' (by which she meant, among other things, an informer on all things connected with the Weltbaum. She also charged Narcissa to deliver news of Schloss Hirschenwald, where her friend Winifred invited her to stay.
