Amelia the Crimson Character in Malgrave | World Anvil

Amelia the Crimson

Amelia DeGariel is a human warrior who is a major part of Malgrave's history. She is considered the greatest hero of the realm of all time.

Description

Appearance

Amelia was a woman with fiery red hair that towered over most. She had a powerful build from a lifetime of hard work at the blacksmith forge and on the battlefield. Her half-plate armor was intricately designed for full mobility and power. Emerald green eyes shone bright with determination, but also a softness around her friends that no other got to see. The weapon she was seen with most was the Sun Blade, a powerful relic that was both as tall as her shoulder stood, but still light enough to wield in one hand.

Personality

Despite a fearsome reputation as a ruthless fighter, Amelia was actually a very calm and laid back person. She had an affinity for empathizing with any creature, even those made of pure evil, without letting it effect her judgement. Her appreciation for efficiency was usually what brought out the idea that she was ruthless as she rarely messed around or wasted her time with anything.

Biography

Background

Early in the Age of Intelligence, the new city of Westfall was getting overcrowded for the available resources at the time. Princess Felicity of Westfall decided to depart from the kingdom, taking most of the non-human citizens with her due to their poor treatment by her father and current king. Amelia DeGariel was one who followed her, as the two had been long time best friends. Together they set out to look for a place to settle where Felicity could realize her dream to make a kingdom without prejudice. Amelia turned out to be inadvertantly instrumental in this endeavor as she openly accepted anyone that offered help so long as they didn't cause problems. As one of the only craftsmen with them, everyone came to rely on her and accept her way of thinking.   They finally settled in the Greymist Mountains with the assistance of a tribe of wood elves and began construction. When they were finished, the city was named Kaltose in honor of the elf that guided them to the lush and hidden area in the mountains.   Not many years later, the gods called upon Amelia for aide. Both her skill and unbiased attitude were appreciated by all of them as it meant she gave no favor to good or evil. They tasked her with monitoring Planar Fluxes in Malgrave, be it from fiends trying to conquor, or celestials trying to purge the material plane. When she accepted, they granted her an ageless body so that she could carry out this task for eternity. Stating that she might need help, the gods agreed to her request that any she deemed worthy would be given a similar blessing, thus forming the beginnings of the Riftwatchers.   For millenia, Amelia fought alongside her chosen warriors, picking up a few every century to add to their ranks. Her appearance in a fight was always marked by her red hair blowing in the wind, earning her the title Amelia the Crimson. She and her Riftwatchers kept all planes at bay from Malgrave, with Amelia being given the Ceresc Seal to close any permanent Rift they came across.   In the middle of the Age of Enlightenment, one of their top priorities had become stopping a cult of mages from unleashing a permanent Rift to the Abyss. During the final confrontation, Warrick Sunwake betrayed his leader. He and several other Riftwatchers had been corrupted by the blood and promises of fiends from battling them so long. He stabbed Amelia in the back, shattering the Ceresc Seal as the blade ran through her, killing her in the middle of the battle. Chaos ensued as those still loyal to her fought off an onslaught of demons and their own comrades. When the battle was over and all was still, it was too late too save her. Their numbers diminished and their leader dead, the remaining Riftwatchers buried Amelia where she fell, marking the spot with her Sun Blade before disbanding.

What a woman and what a sword. Wielding a blade as tall as your shoulder as if it's one-handed is a terrifying concept.   She sounds like a fine person, one who never gave more to one side or another. Definitely a center point in things (which I can see why the gods called on her). It's a shame that she ended up betrayed.   Things I'm curious about: did they know at the time that corruption was a thing that could happen from the fiends they were fighting? Was it accidental corruption by the blood or deliberate? What sort of things were they promised? Oh, and what happened to the traitors?   The sword and the single crimson flower in the middle of a region dubbed the Forsaken Desert is such a bleak but lovely piece of imagery also.

They were not told that corruption was a possibility. In fact, they would have assumed they would have been immune to the effects with the blessings they had. The first to become corrupted were a complete shock to the rest, but over time there were members that would deliberately corrupt themselves. They were typically promised positions of power and wealth that could only be achieved when fiends conquered the realm. Typical greed things with no responsibilities attached anymore. The traitors were mostly killed in the initial betrayal. Those that got away were hunted down by those most loyal to Amelia, but it took nearly 1,000 years to find and kill them all.

Also, thank you for appreciating the imagery! It's one of the places I see clearest in my mind for this world.

Ooof, deliberately corrupting themselves makes it even worse. Makes sense though that they wouldn't have been aware of being able to be corrupted because of their blessings. At least they got them all but 1,000 years is a long time to hunt someone down.   And you are most welcome!
