Westfall Settlement in Malgrave | World Anvil

Westfall

Westfall is the capital city of the Westfall territories. It is in the Northwest most city of Colotan.

Description

The city of Westfall is the largest and most powerful city with an all human ruling class. It is large enough to be considered a small country on its own, and the surrounding territories make up the bulk of the rest of the nation. It has a wide range of living arrangements, with the most luxurious being near the castle and made up of the oldest parts of the city, with the further out areas gradually becoming less expensive and lower quality. It was founded at the beginning of the Age of Enlightenment at the end of the War of the West's Fall. It was the first human settlement to make itself a permanent establishment in Malgrave. It boasts one of the largest and well rounded militaries in the world, with strong infantry, cavalry and a decent fleet of naval ships.   While it tries to set a precedent for equality in its citizens, it has grown large enough that it is not immune to corruption within its borders. Many crime gangs and guilds call Westfall their home while staying small enough or quiet enough to keep from drawing too much unwanted attention.

Noble District

The oldest and therefore most developed part of Westfall, typically housing the richer class citizens with higher quality shops. Finer quality goods and most of the extravagant clothing and jewelry is sold in this district. While not closed off to the public, it is rare for the middle class and almost unheard of for commons to make their way to these establishments. The area surrounds the castle on all sides that are not against the mountain. It also contains the headqurters of the Order of the Silver Lance and the training grounds for the soldiers and guards.
  • Granite Keep: Castle of the Westfall royal family.
  • Silver Lance Headquarters: Barracks of the Order of the Silver Lance and training grounds of all Westfall military and guards.

Commerce District

This district is a combination of affordable businesses and an area for middle class residents. It also houses all of the churches Westfall openly accepts. As Westfall grows, it becomes more like the noble district as time passes, seeing a few mansions starting to pop up on some of the edges. Clothing, basic tools, armor and weapons are most common, as well as inns and eateries frequented by all citizenry.
  • Verdant Manner: The first mansion in the Commerce District and the Headquarters of the Undesirables. It is named after its first owner and not the actual color of the building.

Market District

Always set at the border of Westfall's expanding city line, the Market District is the main place to buy fruits, vegetables and various butchered meats. It is designed this way to give farmers less distance to travel from their fields, making all that don't constantly dine out required to go to the edge of the city or send someone in their stead for fresh products. The lack of permanence to this structure for Westfall's outer most district leaves it feeling like a squalor off the main road. The poorer people live in this area in houses that infrequently qualify as more than small shacks.

Society

Demographics

Westfall is predominantly human, but many other races live there due to the king's inclusive decrees. While the populace is roughly 80 percent human, most live in the Noble and Commerce districts, leaving the Market District disproportionately diverse. Some elves and dwarves live in the Noble and Commerce districts, usually as shop owners, while Halflings have their own sub district straddling the line between the Commerce and Market districts. There are enough Aasimar of note in the Noble District as well, especially within families with ties to the Order of the Silver Lance. Half-Elves and Half-Orcs are abundant in the Market District, along with a surprisingly high Tiefling population. Most other races are present, but rare enough to not have their population noted in any sort of census.

Notable People

  • King Brendan Westfall: Human ruler of Westfall and all its territories.

History

Westfall was founded at the beginning of the Age of Enlightenment as the humans on the continent ended the War of the Fall of the West. It was an end to barbarian warlords and tyrannical rulership on the Western Continent. The leader of the victorious rebels was Ulthan Roscar, dubbed 'Ulthan of the West's Fall', which would eventually be shortened and later adopted as 'Westfall' for his descendants. Due to his charismatic leadership and martial prowess, he was named king with the faith that he would not become the tyrants they had overthrown.   As the city expanded and would later claim territories as part of their growing nation, princes and princesses began to leave, taking part of the populace with them when food and supplies started becoming scarce. This had humans laying claim to most of the Western Continent in a very short time, but with open borders, elves and dwarves that neighbored them quickly became fast allies. The unity and equality to all those within Westfall's borders offered by the ruling class enticed enough people to travel to Westfall for the city to enjoy great prosperity.   While they haven't faced many true hardships since the end of the War of the Fall of the West, many are starting to think they are overextending their reach and the borders they claim are less and less defended as a nation. The outcry of these farther out settlements believe they are overlook or uncared for since the city the nation is named after does not seem to feel the effects of these growing conflicts. There have been increasing number of bandits and raiders in the rural territories especially.
