Kaltose Settlement in Malgrave | World Anvil

Kaltose

Kaltose is a lone city hidden within the Greymist Mountains. It is part of no nation and is secluded enough that only the residents and a handful of others know it exists.

Description

As a very small city, Kaltose is nestled into a small valley between the tallest peaks of the Greymist Mountains. Styles of buildings vary greatly, as though each one is built from a different region of Malgrave. There are no districts or planned infrastructure, with every house and business placed where ever settlers placed themselves.   Just as colorful is the citizenry. There are people from all walks of life residing in Kaltose. There is no dominant race and the population is so small that there hasn't been any real call to assemble a form of government. Despite this, everyone works together and is extremely friendly. Its secluded, hidden location makes it so that outsiders rarely visit as it is nearly impossible to find. Those that do are usually people that deviate from their normal culture and looking for a place to fit in, happening upon it as if by chance. This has earned the settlement the title of 'The City of Lost Souls'.

Demographics

Despite being founded by a human expedition, Kaltose has such a variety of races from across the world that even some that were thought to be extinct can be found there. Few that find the peaceful city want to leave, making it the most diverse culture in all Malgrave.

Notable People

  • Princess Felicity of Westfall: Leader of the expedition that founded Kaltose.

History

In 28AI, the kingdom of Westfall was suffering from overpopulation with its available resources at the time. Apalled that her father suggested driving away the non-humans, Princess Felicity threatened the king to leave and take them with her and any that would follow. Only sixteen at the time, she was not taken seriously and the warriors were mobilized to drive away the minority races. Acting more quickly than anyone expected, the young princess gathered the minorities first and convinced a quarter of the army to come with her, slipping away the night before the expulsion began. This created a controversy between her brothers as they argued whether she was a virtuous leader or a traitor, while the king tried to repair the damage done by recalling the order. Felicity never returned, setting Westfall down a rocky path with conflicting policies sometimes against and sometimes for non-humans.   Felicity took her followers east, crossing the plains and eventually reaching the Evergreen Glade. There, her kindess and heartfelt desire to help her subjects earned her a guide from the wood elves that resided in the forest. Arcanthus Thorn took the small band of travelers over the Greymist Mountains, happening upon a valley insider the mountains. With a fresh spring of water, rich soil, and abundant game and natural food, Felicity decided she had found the perfect spot for her followers to set up their new home. Safe from danger and prejudice, her citizens settled the area gratefully, forming something of a commune together. While they do use coins, it is more common to see bartering of other goods and favors. This is all from the bravery and selflessness that was inspired by their leader and the founder of their little haven.
