Uldric "The Bear"

(a.k.a. The Bear)

Few figures in Darkoa are as well-known—or as broadly built—as Uldric “The Bear.” Tavernmaster of the Bear Grill Tavern, a rowdy longhouse at the edge of the town’s market row. He is quick to anger if his tavern’s honor is insulted, but just as quick to embrace an old friend in a bearhug. He laughs loudly, drinks deeply, and listens long to tales of the wild. His bark is thunder, his punch is lightning, and his tavern—by unwritten law—is neutral ground for any feud not yet blooded.

Uldric earned his nickname decades ago after slaying an owlbear in the Hoarwood, or so he claims. The tale shifts slightly with each telling—sometimes it’s three owlbears, other times he wrestled it blindfolded—but no one dares question the massive stuffed owlbear head mounted over the central hearth, nor his choice cloak. His tavern's name serves as a reminder of both the deed and the bear steaks that followed.

Despite his formidable frame and booming voice, Uldric is the most amiable of Darkoa’s prominent goliaths, so long as you stay on his good side. He holds a deep-rooted prejudice against outsiders, especially southerners from the rest of the Snowcloak Dominion, whom he views as soft, political, and far removed from true northern strength. Still, hunters and warriors—regardless of origin—can earn his respect through tales of worthy prey or brawling prowess.

His longhouse tavern is more than just a watering hole; it’s a cultural hub. The Bear Grill serves as a ritual space for Skjolgardt practices that Uldric seems to tolerate, including seasonal rites, oaths of vengeance, and pit fights beneath the oaken beams. Blood on the floor is considered part of the decor, and Uldric himself often participates in these bouts, bellowing like a storm across the North.
