Darkoa
A bitter and unyielding settlement, Darkoa is the northernmost town on the mainland of the Snowcloak Dominion. Nestled in the rolling, snow-covered foothills west of the Valdraith Peaks, it serves as the last bastion of civilization before the desolate icy expanse that stretches to the coast. Isolated and grim, it is a place where men and women endure out of necessity, not desire. Darkoa stands as a cold and merciless frontier, where only the strong endure. It is a place where survival is the only law, faith is a whispered secret, and death is an ever-present companion.
Government
Darkoa is ruled by Chieftain Havrik Volstagg, a grizzled war-leader whose authority is unquestioned. His rule is stable, for he is both cunning and ruthless, brokering deals with the Dominion while maintaining the town’s autonomy. He permits prisoners and guards to pass through Darkoa but allows no lingering visitors. Outsiders are turned away at the edge of town unless they have a reason to be there, and those who defy the decree are often found frozen in the snow come morning.
Volstagg has no interest in the affairs of the broader Dominion, seeing his rule as absolute within his town’s borders. He tolerates no weakness and has personally executed men who challenge his authority, making a spectacle of their deaths in the town square.
Defences
Darkoa has two primary forces that maintain order:
- Snowcloak Garrison – The Snowcloak Dominion keeps a small but disciplined garrison stationed in Darkoa to oversee the prison’s supply lines and security. These soldiers are hardened by the cold and answer only to their superiors in the Dominion. They do not interfere with town affairs unless absolutely necessary.
- Tribal Warriors – The true defenders of Darkoa are its own people. The Volstagg Clan and other warrior families provide fierce warriors who guard the town against raiders, beasts, and any threat from beyond the mountains. They are not an organized army but a collection of battle-tested hunters and killers who respond swiftly to threats.
Few dare to test Darkoa’s defenses, for its warriors are as relentless as the winter that surrounds them.
Industry & Trade
Darkoa survives through three primary means:
- Hunting and Trapping – The tundra and foothills provide ample game, from hares to great elk, and furs are a primary export. The Bear Grill Tavern is where the best hunters barter their latest trophies.
- Fishing and Whaling – Despite the icy waters, the coastline west of Darkoa is rich with fish and hardy whalers who hunt the great leviathans of the northern seas. The ice-bound coast is treacherous, but the rewards are great for those who can navigate it.
- Prison Trade – Darkoa Prison is sustained by the Snowcloak Dominion, and supplies pass through Darkoa’s hands. While the town itself does not engage in much trade, the presence of the prison ensures that coin and resources continue to flow through.
Few merchants bother with Darkoa, as the journey is perilous and the people have little to trade beyond necessities. The town thrives on self-sufficiency, and the strong survive while the weak are left to freeze.
Guilds and Factions
Faith in Darkoa is an unspoken, dangerous thing. There is no public altar, no place of worship for the Divine or any false gods. Instead, the town square is where heretics and the condemned are burned at the stake, their screams echoing through the frigid air as a warning to others.
The people of Darkoa do not speak openly of faith, yet whispers tell of secret pagan rites in the Valdraith Peaks, where old gods of the cold and stone are worshiped in hidden groves. There are rumors of blood sacrifices made to these entities, of rituals where men give themselves to the ice in exchange for strength and survival. Whether these tales are true or simply myths to frighten children is unknown, but those who disappear into the mountains rarely return.
Points of interest
- The Everfire Pyre – The burning stake in the town square never truly goes cold. Whether by design or superstition, it is always ready to ignite, and the people believe that if it ever ceases to burn, calamity will fall upon Darkoa.
Tourism
Darkoa is a town of survivalists, warriors, and prisoners passing through to their final destination: Darkoa Prison, the largest incarceration facility in the region, located just north of town. The people here are harsh, their tongues sharp as the cold winds that never cease howling through the streets. Strangers are met with suspicion, and there is little in the way of revelry.
The one exception is the Bear Grill Tavern, the only social hub in town, where hunters, trappers, and the battle-hardened gather to swap stories of their kills. The walls are adorned with pelts, heads, and weapons from hunts long past. Here, men and women who live by the hunt drink deeply, boasting of the monstrous creatures they have slain in the frozen wilds. The most respected are those who have brought down great snow bears, dire wolves, or even owlbears that occasionally descend from the peaks.
