Bear Grill Tavern
A bastion of warmth amid the relentless cold of Darkoa, the Bear Grill Tavern is more than just a drinking hall—it is the heart of the town’s warriors, hunters, and survivalists. Styled after a longhouse, its massive timber beams and thatched roof shelter those who seek respite from the howling winds and biting frost. Inside, the scent of roasting meat, spiced ale, and woodsmoke fills the air, and the walls are lined with the trophies of countless hunts—great bear pelts, the skulls of dire wolves, and even the frozen, preserved head of a frost salamander, its icy blue eyes forever staring into the firelit room.
The bar is tended by Uldric the Bear, a massive, grizzled goliath who claims to have killed an owlbear with his bare hands, hence the name of the establishment. Those who can’t pay in coin often barter with pelts, trophies, or tales of worthy hunts.
Atmosphere and Layout
The main hall is vast, built to accommodate the rough and rowdy nature of Darkoa’s folk. Long wooden tables, scarred by years of knives and tankards, run the length of the tavern, where men and women feast, gamble, and brawl with equal enthusiasm. The hearths at the center roars at all hours, a necessary ward against the bitter cold outside.
Outside the main hall is a small fighting pit, where disputes are settled the way the people of Darkoa prefer—through fists and blades. A fight in the Bear Grill is not considered a crime unless one party dies while yielding. Even then, it is usually dismissed as the will of the cold.

The Inn Below
Beneath the tavern, accessible through a reinforced trapdoor behind the bar, lies The Den, a simple yet secure inn carved into the permafrost. Here, weary travelers, visiting warriors, and those too drunk to brave the cold can rent a bed for the night. The rooms are crude, little more than alcoves dug into the frozen earth, lined with thick furs to keep out the chill. Each room has a stone lantern for warmth and light, though guests are warned to never let their flames die, lest the frost creep into their bones.
Few visitors stay long—those who do are either desperate, hiding from something worse, or foolish enough to think they belong in Darkoa.
Traditions and Notable Features
- The Huntmaster’s Thrones – A massive wooden chair at the head of the hall, reserved for the best hunter of the season. Whoever slays the most fearsome beast earns the right to sit there, their name carved into the wood for all to see. The throne next to them serves as a place where their kill sits. The scene it creates is absurd, but is hilarious to the celebrating hunters.
- The Trophy Wall – A sacred tradition of the Bear Grill, where hunters nail tokens from their greatest kills—claws, horns, or even entire skulls. Those who take down a truly legendary creature have their names burned into the beam above their token.
- The Blooded Horn – A rite of passage for young warriors. They must drink dire wolf blood from a hollowed-out while telling the story of their first kill. If their story is unworthy, the hall erupts in laughter, and they are sent into the wilds to prove themselves.
- The Frost Oath – A pact made in the Bear Grill, sworn over a shared drink of spiced mead and wolf’s blood. Those who break such an oath are branded oathbreakers and exiled to the wastes.
The Bear Grill Tavern is not for the weak, nor for outsiders, but for those who thrive in the hunt and the fight. It is a place where legends are forged, where the fire never dies, and where the strongest drink, fight, and feast until the cold finally claims them.
