Darkoa Prison

Darkoa Prison is a fortress of ice and stone, looming on the edge of the world where the frigid winds of the Snowcloak Dominion howl through the Valdraith Peaks. It is the largest prison in the dominion and among the most formidable in all of Logos. Stone carved from the mountainside and surrounded by an expanse of deadly icefields, Darkoa Prison is a place of permanent exile, where criminals, traitors, and the forsaken are left to wither away.

It is isolated by both nature and decree, as the cold itself is as much a warden as the men who patrol its walls. The snowstorms, lack of resources, and sheer remoteness make escape nearly impossible—not that many have survived long enough to attempt it. The prison is more than just a place of punishment; it is a grave where the condemned walk before they freeze.

Notable Prisoners

  • Eldrin Valstar, The White Viper – A former noble who plotted against the Snowcloak Dominion’s King Philus Eber. Once a respected diplomat, he was discovered smuggling information to enemies of the realm. They say his tongue was cut out upon arrival.
  • Orla Haggart, The Frozen Witch – A powerful mage accused of raising the dead in the Valdraith foothills. She still whispers in tongues, and rumors claim her cell is perpetually warm, despite no fire being lit within.
  • Rudrig the Bloodied – A war criminal from a long-forgotten battle, now a withered old man who speaks only in riddles. It is said he once slew an entire village single-handedly, yet no one knows why he committed such an atrocity.
  • Gunnar Two-Skins – A shapeshifter (believed to be a Perla) caught using false identities to infiltrate Dominion war councils. Forced to remain in his natural form, his pearl-like flesh glows faintly even in the darkness of his cell.

Prison Conditions & Daily Life

Life in Darkoa Prison is brutal, short, and hopeless. The prisoners are given bare minimum rations—just enough to keep them alive but never enough to give them strength. Furs and warmth are luxuries, distributed sparingly to the compliant and withheld from the disobedient. Prisoners are put to work—digging stone from the mountain, maintaining their own cells, and chopping ice for drinking water.

Punishments are swift and cruel. The guilty are stripped of their furs and left outside until frostbite claims them.

Escape is a myth. The cold kills more effectively than any guard, and the wilderness beyond is a death sentence, if they aren't burned to death in Darkoa.

Defenses

  • Commander Ingvar "Cold-Eye" Hrodssen – A grizzled veteran of Snowcloak’s wars, Ingvar is a former chieftain who lost his tribe to a brutal clan feud. Cold and pragmatic, he has no mercy for prisoners and rules the prison with an iron fist. Some say he has never smiled. Others say his heart froze long ago.
  • Captain Yrsa the Wolf – The prison's chief enforcer, she commands the garrison with ruthless efficiency. A former raider turned Dominion loyalist, she keeps order through fear and swift punishment. Known for carrying a runed axe, she has personally executed more prisoners than anyone else in Darkoa’s history.
  • Quartermaster Veklin – Responsible for rationing supplies and ensuring the prison’s self-sufficiency. He is known for hoarding warmth, meaning only the obedient get access to extra furs or better food.
  • The Icebrand Sentinels – Elite warriors stationed at Darkoa Prison, chosen for their endurance and cruelty. They wear heavy wolf-fur cloaks and carry barbed spears, ensuring escape is met with a slow and painful death.
