Saburra Desert Station
Just outside the city of Saburra is the Desert Station.
Part drinking house, part stables, part general store, the station exists to tend to the caravans heading east, and the Eratora birds that make up most of the wisest journeys out that way. Domelike, with reinforced membrane windows and a long spire atop which a windvane of purple greshire is tied, the entire structure is hardened and pitted by heat and sand and wind, its roots driven deep into the land to hold it down and let it seek the water table deep within the sands. On clear nights, delicate vines of bioluminescent plants are unfurled, painting the weathered tan building in pale purple light, while wind circuits are painted when storms approach, to keep the station lit up for travellers as long as possible.
The tavern is manned by a rotating staff of three people, the owner - and their two mates. Living above the tavern allows greater access to the station and with the city right next door, allows them to manage how many people will stay the night on one of the 8 hammocks. The store is a section of the tavern divided off to provide some privacy to buyers and has both general supplies and things traded that might have higher value but are unique by way of trade. Currency is not accepted between these walls, as with the number of routes passing through Saburra, the sheer number of things would become unwieldy. The desert station can supply you with names to a guide that might be willing to take you, or the location where one could find the things they need within the city. But you are welcome to stay until you are safe to travel. All are welcome there.
The Stables
The stables can fit about 25 of standard travel animals, with a couple of larger stalls for the more eclectic animals and creations that have been used for the journeys made into the desert. While E-pede travel is possible in this desert clime, the draining heat and the sheer energy consumption of the E-pede makes such journeys unwise - still there are stalls large enough to house even this ridiculous idea. Basic bird care supplies are free use, though travellers are encouraged to replace things or leave something in trade after passing through. The stables themselves have a welcoming vibe, the lights from the plants when not in use are strung up here and give the stables a gentle glow, with pillows set up for people to sit with their animals until they are calm and set down for the night, with large troughs of water before each stall, and gourds inside for depositing feed-stuffs inside, though if your animal needs anything unique you might have to head for the city. The tavern is manned by a rotating staff of three people, the owner - and their two mates. Pick a guide, show them a map heading northeast.
Deeper into the desert lies a refill station about three day's journey. It is manned by the family too, some water, some dried supplies, a wind circuit to buffer against the desert sands. This is the Tydal and is one of the many waypoints the Station has set up within travelling distance of the main hub to allow wanderers safe travels back to the station. For use of these the best trade is a good Binding, or a deep tale, something to warm the mental muscles while the family tend to those sore from the path.
Eratora are 12 foot tall flightless birds with a large touchan-like beak and Cassowary like sharp claws.
They tend to be most relaxed in groups of 4 to 5 birds and live in the plains and deserts east of Saburra.
They are very easily domesticised, though the groups that use the Eratora more encourage these massive birds to want to go where the riders want, rather than any illusions of control.
Their feathers are a light red-brown to match the sands of the desert east of Saburra and they can go several days without water after guzzling heavily before any trip.

It would be fun to ride one of the Eratora, I imagine it to be rather like riding an Ostrich.
I'd imagine so too.
