House Mearis of the Evening Isles

The Evening Isles and the city of Mearia have always been a highly contested area. In the midst of it, House Mearis has remained the ruling family in the Evening Isles. While the islands at the edge of the Silver Sea were conquered by one kingdom or another many times, the allegiance of House Mearis to one King or the other has reportedly shifted even more often.

Nowadays, with the Evening Isles having been split up between the kingdoms of Eleonis and Aguilear, House Mearis is answers to both Kings, but isn't entirely oblidged to serve either one. This can, unsurprisingly, lead to a few problems, though it has mostly served to solidify House Mearis' reputation of being rather inconsistent in its allegiances.

The Lords of the Evening Isles have never been known for their military prowess, but rather for their skill with negotiation and manipulation. Arian Mearis, the current Lord, is known to be particularly eloquent. The other Houses of Eleonis and Aguilear tend to have a more militaristic approach to politics and are often intimidated by the prospect of needing to negotiate with him.

The seat of House Mearis is located in the northern half of the city Mearia. The impressive arched stone bridge of Mearia is the most notable and memorable sight in the city. It is therefore represented on the crest of House Mearis as a golden bridge on a blue background, representing the Evening Isles' close relationship to the ocean.

Since the Evening Isles are islands located between the Western Sea and the Silver Sea. Any person transporting goods on ships into or out of the area around the Silver Sea has to pass through the Evening Isles. The most of the trade through the Evening Isles and specifically Mearia is overseen, controlled and taxed by House Mearis, making them responsible for trade as well as controlling piracy.
