Bridge of Mearia

The Bridge of Mearia, also known as the Gate to the Silver Sea, is the most notable landmark in the city of Mearia on the Evening Isles. It connects the two halves of the city, simultaneously creating a connection between Eleonis and Aguilear. It is regarded as one of the most impressive buildings in all of Leanor due to its sheer size and the engineering required to be able to build it. The bridge spans a large distance and is comprised of many consecutive arches, the tallest in the centre of the strait tall enough to allow even large sailing vessels to pass through comfortably.

The nickname of the bridge, Gate to the Silver Sea, sometimes creates some confusion, since the Evening Isles are also referred to as the Gates to the Silver Sea. However, gate, singular, usually refers to the bridge, while gates, plural, is used to describe the islands as a whole. Technically, there are multiple possible passages through the Evening Isles, but most ships take the passage through Mearia, even though it is a little bit of a detour if Mearia isn't the destination. Part of the reason are the merchants and the gastronomy and accomodation offered in Mearia, but one important reason is the bridge itself. Especially ships carrying travellers or tourists like to make port in Mearia on their way between the Silver Sea and the Western Sea, since both the city and the bridge are certainly worth a visit.

Throughout history, multiple iterations of the bridge have existed, the first ones made from wood, but since the Evening Isles were location and point of conflict between Eleonis and Aguilear for a long time, it has been destroyed multiple times, either accidentally or on purpose. The current bridge was built after the two kingdoms agreed to split the islands among them and represents the peace between the two.
