Waning Rock Material in Laminarum | World Anvil

Waning Rock

Waning rock is a substance largely found in the northwestern reaches of Silse. originally presented to king Uliyo Feneyl by Dour Rai as a way to spur a mutiny against Vhou Riyael and the River Kingdom of Nim, it is now the most common power source found across the western elvish Kingdom of Urale. Many of its properties are unknown, due to the covetous and superior nature of the Western Elves. While contemporary information on the mineral is sparse, there are still tales from the The War of Eyiliv  that may shed light upon its capabilities.

Source of Power

Waning rock's primary function is as a source of power, allowing the function of steam engines all across the cities of Urale. Engines and manners of utilizing the waning rocks are always developing as the Feneyl Dynasty funds independent researchers to stride in developments. Given that the nation boasts the world's most impressive engineers and mechanics, waning rock has been utilized for town-wide power generation, rudimentary automatons, as well as early research into functional steel ships.

Transmutation

Transmutation is one of waning rock's core capabilities, being able to completely alter elements into any necessary material, given the user has enough skill. the Kingdom of Urale has been vigilant in banning the use of transmutation outside of special circumstances. While contracted researchers are allowed to utilize unfettered transmutation, the kingdom has mostly grown concerned regarding the shifting of currency. The largest concern is the process that converts gold to platinum, as it is an elementary process, achievable by most that have unlocked the secrets of waning rocks.

Levitation

Levitation is possibly the most famed capability of waning rock, as seen in the incredible Waning Keep. Yet another simplistic power of the rocks most can induce levitation with little effort. The difficulty comes from concise control over levitation, which has led to groundbreaking research in levitating grafts such as zeppelins, though a functional vehicle has never been achieved. The Waning Keep itself has not exorcised precise control in its levitation, hence the vast chains and guardhouses keeping the mass of land in place.

Properties

Material Characteristics

The material starts with a similar look to white shale, as it grows black and course with use, giving it a similar aesthetic to rust.

Geology & Geography

The material is found in the farthest reaches of northwestern Silse, as well as the two grand islands to the north of the proximal bay.

History & Usage

Discovery

Though Dour Rai's details regarding his own acquisition of the material are sparse, it is presumed he located it in its region of origin. Upon gaining a sample, it was given to Uliyo Feneyl in hopes of inspiring independence from Nim, where it would eventually be sought after by the entire new nation.

Consequences of Freedom

Waning rock is as much a symbol as it is a source of power. Largely following a philosophy which shuns the gods, western elves desperately desired a way to carve their own fate and escape the plight that the gods had put them through ever since the The Exodus of Ghei Wyl  . Waning rock certainly allowed the westerners to carve their own path, but the material has unfortunate side effects felt by every member of the nation. Extended direct contact can result in illness, which can be lethal if over exposed. Hair loss is common amongst researchers that work closely with the material, as well as the miners that collect it. As generations went on, those that lived farthest from the large cities could be said to appear similar to Marsh Orcs, as opposed to their eastern elvish cousins. those within cities, particularly Ilobel and Gerron tend to have a harrowing look about them, often developing goiters, hives, or light necrosis. Many of these side effects were only unveiled when waning rock was deeply ingrained in western elvish society, though the elves hardly seem to mind the cost of utilizing the fuel source.

A shining Seat of Power

the Waning Keep, designed by Levrin Feneyl and Dour Rai, is the seat of power in the Kingdom of Urale. Built long before the dark era of Ettermiddag, the keep stand upon a vast piece of land that levitates thanks to the power of waning rocks. Held to the ground by incredible chains, each link the size of a small ship, assassins would struggle to reach the heads of the Feneyl Dynasty as they spend their days ruling from the keep. At the base of the chains is an extensive and well secured guard house. For more on the Waning Keep, read the following article:
