Taopin Character in Laminarum | World Anvil

Taopin (Tao-pen)

Figurehead of the Augury

Taopin, while not the source of foresight itself, represents the Augury. After abandoning the Saltkrigere religion and pushing Bailum aside, the new senate scrambled to decide which Ohfjuren brother would take his place. Chaimut may have been the source of foresight, but he was ultimately a brutal yet subservient god throughout mythology. Taopin became the natural choice due to his substantial impact on the human perspective after the Reincarnate Promise. By the grace of Taopin's reincarnate promise, the souls of all humans are bound and passed from generation to generation, being tested in new lives until they can reach their appropriate afterlife. To improve matters for Taopin as a religious patriarch, he represented sacrifice, which the government wished for the public to perceive.

Domain

Taopin is not only a figure of reincarnation, sacrifice, and self-control. According to the legends, Taopin had no desire to take his domain, but he would take it regardless in hopes of repairing his family and making amends for prior infractions. Perhaps the most dynamic deity in the pantheon, Taopin has shifted goals several times, slowly gaining wisdom throughout the epics and gaining stoic control over himself.

Complex Relations

Relations between Taopin and other deities or entities have long been complicated. Early stories depict Taopin as arrogant and aggressive, hiding Silset away from her father, Ornjack. Sooner than that, he would eliminate humanity for their assertions against the gods, only leaving two survivors behind, damaging relations with Bailum. Later on, tales were told of his aging and reparations made with a variety of his enemies. At present, it is presumed he has positive relations with his oldest brother and even serves once more on his court.

Servants of Taopin

Servants to Taopin are common across the Augury due to his patriarchal status over the Ohdaufeen. Chapels dedicated to his likeness can be found in practically every city. Even as the government begins shifting to a full "Ohfjuren" focused religion, Taopin remains the most common. Certain fringe cults can be found throughout the land and organizations looking for legitimacy in the eyes of the Augury scarcely need more than a mention of Taopin's name.

History

Chaimut and Taopin have a loving relationship and a long history of friendly competition, bets, and bargains. Chaimut's children were mostly parented by Taopin's wife, Silset.

History

Bailum care's for Taopin, but thinks of him as immature and brash. As the oldest sibling, Bailum can also feel entitled to many benefits that ended up befalling Taopin, such as marriage to Silset.   Further, Bailum is the guardian of humanity. He had a great affinity for their frail existence and felt betrayed when Taopin almost entirely eliminated them. Taopin feels that leaving 2 alive was a great gesture of kindness. Presumably to Bailum's dismay, many humans agree with Taopin.

History

Though Ornjack has given much assistance to Taopin over the years, he has rarely had the favor returned. As it stands now, Taopin does not allow communication between Ornjack and Silset. This has driven a steep hatred for Taopin, but he cannot act on this due to fear over Silset's safety.
