Chaimut Character in Laminarum | World Anvil

Chaimut (Ch-eye-moot)

The Cruel Ohfjuren

Amongst the three Ohfjuren brothers, Chaimut is the middle child. Revered for his cunning tactics, stories tend to depict Chaimut as cruel in his pursuit of power, and his foresight into the future typically guarantees his success. One of his most popular stories involves the forced relationship between his daughter and nephew, giving rise to a powerful child that he wished to control, which can be seen in the story of Mitos. Chaimut generally shows no remorse in creating conflict within the family, manipulating loved ones, slaying wrongdoers, or completely altering events throughout time. Some examples even show that he's been willing to cut deals with devils to the detriment of the Ohdaufeen. While the youngest brother, Taopin, has committed atrocities before, none consider him as intentionally malignant as Chaimut. Worst of all, the keeper of time always feels his choices to be justified, and his foresight makes this difficult to dispute.

Domains

Of the Universe

Chaimut commands authority over time and all of its consequences. It is Chaimut's responsibility to ensure that time continues to flow properly, and his foresight is necessary to keep Laminarum safe. Some stories state that he has insight into the desires of Saaurithale, which uniquely allows him to see the future of the universe.   His agency over time also gives him authority over decay, which he eventually sired in two ways through his children: war and nature. This agency of natural and societal entropy pushes the universe toward Chaimut's intended place, the implications of which are unknown.   While Chaimut might not control things such as reproduction and cosmic motion, he does set the "time" that any process must take. Whether the gestation time of an animal, the length of a day, or the time it takes for tinder to burn, Chaimut had a say in the matter.

Of the Mind

Beyond controlling the mechanisms that command time, Chaimut has authority over certain mechanisms of the mind. As all things are lost to time, it is Chaimut who decides when something must fade. sculptures, scrolls, buildings, and memory are all subject to Chaimut's slow waves of fading; however, things lost within Laminarum are not gone. Within his plane, all things that are lost reappear. Faded memories of the elderly rest on his shelves and collapsed civilizations dot his landscapes. In the eyes of Chaimut's followers, the mind is a library for information to be preserved through time, and when those ideas are lost they must go somewhere.   Chaimut is typically considered a cruel agent over memory, though it's for the greater good. Whenever an individual forgets, it is because Chaimut desires the information; in fact, several "amnesia" stories about the gods end with the revelation that Chaimut stole the protagonist's memories for himself, often as ingredients for spells.   Other small aspects of his domain include agency, aging, and foresight. There are even references to him having an impact on dreams.

Sentencer of a Cosmic Court

"Chaimut, master of time, once stood as a judge over Bailum's interplanar court of justice. In an age long ago when the brothers had a sole purpose and understanding, Taopin, Bailum, and Chaimut served the planes by hearing the crimes Ithitar and Ohdaufeen alike. Each brother served their roles with dignity: Bailum as the sole judge of intent and character, Taopin as the bailiff, and Chaimut as the sentencer. Each of their skills played a valuable role in ensuring security over the planes, but Chaimut's was perhaps the most apt. With foresight into the defendents' futures, he was capable of deciding what sentence and length would make the punishment just.   While the court was valuable in its initial form, even being replicated by the Saltkrigere Empire, it would collapse after rifts between the Ohfjuren made its continuation impossible. Taopin eliminated humanity, making him subject to a trial himself. To hear his crimes, Ornjack was brought forth as a supplement for the lost bailiff. In this instance, Chaimut himself would sentence Taopin with the domain of reincarnation. In later years, it was revealed that Chaimut had been passing sentences that served his own desires, resulting in his dismissal.   The final court would oust the god of time, leaving Ornjack and Bailum to rule the court themselves. Prior affronts under Chaimut had been ignored in sake of diplomatic immunity, but upon this great betrayal being revealed, all prior crimes would be punished. For his offenses against the court, the manipulation of Mitos, the entrapment of Bailum, and a litany of other affronts, Chaimut would be sentenced to "the Eagle's Flight." The punishment in question saw him partially flayed for the purpose of crafting wings. With said wings, he would pull his daughters' planes of Summer and Winter across their axis, resulting in the eternal transition between the two territories. While the punishment was eternal, it is said he gets a day of rest on the solistice, where he performs his duties across the other planes.

History

Bailum and Chaimut have a mutual feeling of scorn between them. In the Court of Perri, Bailum tried to indict their brother. Chaimut saw this as a betrayal of the gods (and a preference for mortals). Bailum saw Chaimut's view as a personal betrayal and lack of support.   To make matters worse, Chaimut betrayed Bailum's son which almost led to the destruction of Laminarum. See Rel Eteisus

Impact on the Augury

Given that Chaimut provides the human empire with the power of augury, many presume that he should serve as the figurehead, rather than Taopin. Perhaps the reason for this disparity is the mischievous and cunning nature of the time god, which hardly leaves listeners optimistic about his authority. With Chaimut often incapable of maintaining his own facets of the universe ordained with "time," it is Taopin who takes up the mantle, and through this work he has achieved wisdom of many varieties.
