The Hunt for the Werewolf (part 1)

General Summary

Kursi 39   The trial is on Hudsi 10. In the meantime Adaon is thinking of hunting the wild werewolf in Port-Entre-Portes. Ivan agrees.   They are challenged when leaving the city, but the guard goes and gets a captain who authorizes their leaving. Adaon casts "nimbus" on Ivan's armour. They are also armed with a magical make-do net that is woven with the refined spider silk and silver.   They wander for over an hour before they encounter even an animal. It gets really quiet and they are attacked by a horrible smelling 7-foot tall shambling pile of rotten humanoid vegetation (guardian mound - this is a nature spirit that guards a particular area). After several exchanges, in which both of our heroes are injured, they damage it enough that it flees quickly away from them into the woods. Afterwards Adaon uses "Kunzite's Sanitary Wash" to clean them both completely. Ivan really appreciates this!   They move away from the smelly area and Adaon sets up a circle to make a "Wall of Force". The idea here is that Adaon will be bait and run through the circle, and as the werewolf chases him through and Adaon leaves the circle, Ivan activates it through a rune that Adaon has given him, then the wall of force activates. As bait Adaon meditates to cast an illusion of Cyren fighting one of the mountain people, since it is known that the werewolf had preyed upon the mountain people at least once. Using artistry, Adaon burns Karma, and still fails (barely). While this is not perfectly accurate. Ivan examines it and thinks that it's good enough. [The player joke is that underneath the helm's visor Cyren's face is on sideways.] {The cost of the illusion is 41.}   Ivan: Oh, no, we're out in the wilderness, covered in this delicious sauce. Why are we here... I'm so meaty and healthy...   Three hours later... still nothing. A few minutes later something shambles through the trees... A troll steps out of the woods and slowly investigates. Another comes out of the trees, and they poke and prod the dead bodies, eventually picking up the "dead" mountain creature. The illusion is good enough that they pick it up and eat it. Ivan looks over at Adaon with a "what the f?" kind of look. The heroes try to sneak away, but Ivan makes noise, attracting them. They charge at him'   Adaon yells, "Begone, lest you eat iron!" The trolls ignore him.   Ivan casts his lightning, but misses. The trolls stop and look at him puzzled, also look back and forth. Ivan lights himself up with his paladin fire. The keep acting confused. Adaon blows some iron filings at them magically. They ignore him. Ivan throws his hammer and calls it back to him as an intimidation tactic. They leave, but not at a full run.   A couple of hours later some sprites come around and investigate the pair and are especially curious about Ivan. After about 10 minutes of walking a few deer run across their path and the sprites disappear. A few minutes later they come across a wolverine and its kill. They track around the wolverine, leaving it in peace. Another hours and they decide to make camp.   Kuris 40   Our heroes make camp. Adaon goes to sleep; Ivan is fine, because he napped before they left. Six hours later Ivan takes his nap and Adaon. It is noon. After about an hour a wild boar wanders by. Adaon starts to sing, which makes it charge. Adaon quickly casts his emergency (panic) ice spikes spell. The boar charges into the wall twice, taking damage that nearly disables it, collapsing the wall. Adaon attacks it using his "hammer strike" spell, punching it for 16 damage, finishing it off. Ivan is, of course, awaken. He says, "Well, that's a hell of a thing to wake up to." He then goes back to sleep.   Adaon dresses the boar. The guts will be kept for bait. Adaon is successful and they have the meat and skin and all well prepared. Once Ivan wakes up Adaon tries to use Ivan's holy hammer to recharge his "hammer strike" spell. He cannot lift it (the hammer won't let him). Ivan teases him about being a wimpy boy. Adaon tries to explain that it's not the weight of the hammer, but that the hammer won't let him. At first Ivan doesn't get it. After about four tries Ivan finally understands. So he co-operates with Ivan to make the spells.   Adaon stores the meat in his "larger on the inside bag". He explains that to Ivan, then uses the planar sword to go back to his shack in Port-Entre-Portes to store the meat. Adaon freezes the meat magically. Before he leaves, they argue about Ivan being left alone. Ivan assures Adaon that he'll be fine for a few minutes. So the meat is stored. Adaon naps for another three hours. So, around 9:30 they set out on their hunt.   Kursi 40 - 9:30 pm   They set out the guts of the boar about 10 metres away, crosswind of them. Adaon sends out his "mind of the moon" spell, which gives him awareness of anything that crosses a 100 metre radius circle centred on him. After they have been waiting about 20 minutes he detects a pack of five ghouls coming across the circle, attracted by the rotting innards of the boar. They curse that it's not a werewolf and wonder why there are ghouls out here.   Adaon decides that he doesn't want them to be around here. Ivan asks Adaon if he can just use his Necros' priest powers to make them go away. He says, "No, I'm not that kind of Necros priest." He starts to prepare a spell...   He casts a non-regenerate spell at the group (wounding). He hits... He then casts "energy storm" on himself. This makes force lightning around him. He walks towards them. One of the ghouls looks up at him and stops, but the others are intent on the carrion. They start grabbing it and start eating. Adaon sets of the spell -- it casts 16 damage at the feasting ghouls. The other has ran away. Adaon then burns the heads of the other ghouls and stacks them up and burns them.   After an hour he is finished and decided to backtrack the ghouls using "Nose of the bloodhound". They both try to track the ghouls, but lose the trail because the crossed a stream. They decide to follow up the stream. After an hour they come across an old abandoned village. Ivan suggest that they check the houses. First he says out loud, "What if this is an illusion?" He tries to see through, but nothing. Adaon things this over, and realizes that Ivan is correct. The village now looks like it is less than 5 years abandoned, including seeing freshly raided graves and gnawed skeletons on the ground.   They decide to investigate the church, finding church severely vandalized, and smelling awful - rotten wood and mildew. It was a church of Ga-La. They both start to feel nauseous. At first they think it's an illusion, but realize that it isn't fairly quickly. They check the next home and the feeling of nausea grows.   Adaon casts "Blood of the Boar" on them to boost their constitution temporarily.   They wander in further and Ivan spies several dark figures ahead, sneaking between the buildings. They decide to leave the village. Once they are 100 metres away the nausea disappears.   They go back. Adaon summons his fire elemental and tasks it to burn the perimeter of the village, while Adaon will use anti-fire to destroy the inner part of the village. So in they go, with Ivan ready to fight off any ghouls. Ivan says, "I do love when we can solve our problems by setting them on fire!"   Once they are in the village a large pack of ghouls charges. Adaon sets the ground on fire with anti-fire. Ghouls fear fire, so they flee! Pika (the fire elemental) is meanwhile lighting up the outside of the village. Ivan decides to investigate the church. He finds nothing. He then decides to investigate the outbuilding. He finds several tools and a body cart in there. "Yup, that's a shed."   Adaon, meanwhile, is setting buildings on fire.   They decide to investigate the biggest house in the village. The door is open, leaves blowing in. There are ghoul tracks going in and out of the house. They go in and Adaon stomps to see if there is a basement. There is, indeed. Adaon quickly finds a trap door to the basement. Ivan breaks the handle, but not the lock. So he hammers through it.   There is a narrow, spiral staircase going in. Ivan lights his paladin fire.   They find a large basement that looks like some kind of workshop. with the strange things they find, they conclude that this may have been a torture chamber or some such. There is a large table that has a metal top, about seven feet long. When examined it has holes and pins on it that may be used to set straps to hold a human's limbs down. There is also a bench along one wall that apparently had a space for tools above it. There is also a dining table with six chairs around it. They look more around the room and notice that the rafters have holes in them. The furthest rafter back from the bench and dining table has one of these holes with a large hook hanging from it.   They search and find a door hidden behind the work bench/table leading further underneath. The staircase down leads to another door. They find that there's a symbol of Hudda on the door. Adaon checks for traps and they find that the door is needle trapped. They avoid this and push open the squeaky door. It is a summoning room. They open the cabinet and find four small jars with herbs in them. They begin searching some more. Adaon flubs and ends up in the church, (teleported). Ivan finds a book hidden behind a strange tapestry. It has the same symbol of Hudda on it.   They leave and burn the rest of the village down. Adaon brings Pika back into the bracer.   Kursi 41 - just past midnight (very early in the day)   Our two heroes watch the village burning and Ivan mentions that there could have been magic items in the church or the big house.   [session ends here]
