Session 32
After a long journey, Sam Calas and Kalydin arrived in Darholm, the capital city of Mitlind. The last leg of their journey being to cross the moutain pass and recieve their pay for delivering the main across the corners of their country. On their return trip, they noticed that tensions within Mitlind were rising. More guards and mercenary troupes were being stationed on the roads and in town. The populace seemed restless. As the two of them arrived in Darholm, they were quickly approached by a mysterious, elven man.
The elf introduced themself as Victor Gibbet, an investigator hired by a member of the Mitlind Parliament. Their job was to make contact with and subsequently contract their group to assist with the upcoming peace summit that would be taking place in Darholm. Delegates from both Hydenbur and Morris Cove would be arriving in town in order to broker a peace agreement and cease their hostilities. Victor invited Sam and Kalydin to join him for a drink, an invitation Kalydin readily accepted.
They decided to drink at one of the more popular taverns in town, 'The Smallest Boot' where a halfling was preparing to play their set. Victor spoke frankly to our two remaining heroes, telling them that the peace summit would be starting in two months, and that the stakes are high. Failure likely means war, which likely means hundreds of thousands will die, with Mitlind caught in the middle again. The halfling, Sierra , overheard their conversation, and took great interest when Victor told them what level of pay they would get if they accepted.
Sam and Kalydin took a moment to think about it, before agreeing to take the contract. Sierra, having a history with Victor, inserted herself in hopes of getting in on the massive payout. She was hired along side them by Thast Istode, the parliamentary member for M'orn. With their contracts signed and binding, our heroes, both old and new needed to decide how best to prepare over the next two months.
Kalydin travelled north-west, to Ellbridge, and spent his time with Francis. Sam stayed in M'orn with the woman who tended to the massive cemetary there. Sierra played her usual shows, doing a circuit of the local taverns and Victor made plans and collected information about who was coming and what kind of force they were bringing.
As the months passed, and winter turned to spring, our heroes reconviened to watch the processions enter town. The first to arrive were Hydenbur, sending a contingent of heralds, crusaders and squires. They were represented by the half-elven gentleman, Illiphar Ceretan; a known champion of Judgement. Soon after, Morris Cove arrived, sending a collection of soldiers, a smaller contingent of knights and two high ranking officials; the highly decorated and celebrated war veteran, Osmer Bewick, and the folk hero who has been climbing the ranks, Rohan Lyse.
Sam, upon seeing Rohan, froze. Terror seeped into his mind, soon followed by anger, rage, wrath. Sierra, noticing this in him, used her magic to calm him, stopping the smoke that had begun to seep through the armour. Sam donned a mask to hide his face, Victor took note of this, some of his own suspicions about this group had now been confirmed. As the processions walked on to their destination, Sam turned to Victor and stated that they needed to talk.
They walked into an alley nearby where Sam confronted Victor. Sam asked how Victor knew so much, who did he work for and why was he getting himself involved. Victor, noting the hardened expression on Sam's face spilled the beans. He explained everything, as well as his own personal reasons for geting involved. He shared what he learned in the last two months about the delegates, namely that Rohan, the lieutenant assigned to the Morris Cove contingent, was a folk hero for having routed a cult in the heartland of Morris Cove. A cult lead by Sam. Sam denounced this as a blatant fabrication of events, a reversal of the true story. Whether through intuition or a willingness to believe that Sam was honest, Victor agreed that Rohan was not to be trusted. They agreed that, before this peace summit was over, they would ruin him.
