Karakadaw Settlement in Kobos | World Anvil

Karakadaw

"The metropolis beneath the Barrier Mountains has more dwarves in it than you would believe. They've hollowed out the roots of mountains to accommodate their numbers and their workshops, and even miles above them you can hear the pounding of their hammers.   "The gnomes make up the north hemisphere of the city, and their lives are different. They exist to service and operate the Aincuggesnirviclagillipog, and it's taken on an almost religious zeal for them.   "What goes on on the other side of that portal, who can say? Whatever it is, from what I understand it has made Clan Dawi the most powerful family of dwarves on Kobos."   ~Margrave Arronax Skinner, Elector of Cambreath

Demographics

The majority in the southern half of the city are Mountain Dwarves. The majority in the northern half are Rock Gnomes. On the other side of the portal, the city is dominated by Forge Dwarves and Gondsmen. Craftsmen from other races often apprentice for a time in the city, leaving once their craft has been improved. The city's architecture is designed for dwarves and gnomes, and most other races find the place uncomfortable.

Government

The Thruma is the supreme authority in the city, with a council advising her on behalf of the local craftsmen and merchants.

Defences

The Seven Gates are massive adamantine gates that seal the routes to the city in the event of an attack, both from above and below.

Industry & Trade

Smithing, metalcrafting, and runecrafting are the major economic activities of the city. It's said that the hammers of Karakadaw never fall silent. On the north side of the city, the gnomes make ends meet with clockwork and gnomecraft.

Infrastructure

The Edhekadrel has a system of pipes that provide heat, steam, and fire-plane gases to the places that need them. These pipes run the entirety of the city, and for the most part they are kept exposed for easy maintenance and repair. The city at first glance looks like a chaotic jumble of tunnels, ladders, rooms and stairways but natives find it efficient and easy to navigate.   On the gnome side of the city, the lanes and access tunnels are all built to service the Aincuggesnirviclagillipog

Guilds and Factions

The dwarf clans make up the various factions, with each clan being diversified and entrenched in local economics and politics. The gnomes don't concern themselves overmuch with the factionalism in their dwarf leadership.

Architecture

The south side of the city of Karakadaw is quintessentially dwarven. Straight lines, sharp corners, and all of it made of stone and metal. The orderly lines are broken only by the ubiquitous pipes that run the whole of the city.   On the north side, the tunnels become smaller and more cramped, with rounded edges more aesthetic for the gnomes.
