Republic of Mexico

The Republic of Mexico, or simply the Republic, was a nation in North America bordering the King of America, the United Mexican States, and the Kingdom of Catrachia.

History

Following the execution of Emperor Vicente II in 1865 and the exile of Miguel in 1867, the Republic of Mexico was proclimed from the steps of Mexico City. However, the formation of a centralized government worried many in the states, who wanted a federalized system like that in Gran Colombia. What started out as political disputes erupted into the Mexican Revolutionary War in 1868. Even as peace was agreed in Astoria in 1871, no clear winner was declared.

Even as states broke away from the Republic to join America, the political division within the Republic grew. The Liberals that remained pushed for reform through diplomatic measures. When that failed, many called for armed revolution, beginning the Reform War in 1875. The states that held liberal governments formed the United Mexican States, bisecting the Republic in two. The southern portion of the Republic held the majority of the region's population and resources, and so held the Liberals at bay. The Republic came under the command of Porfirio Diaz and a military dictatorship, though remained strong.

During the Porfiriato, the Republic held against the attempts of the UMS to interfere in the Republic's elections during the 1890's and early 20th century. however, after Diaz's death in 1910, the Republic struggled to determine a replacement and fell into instability. It wasn't until the Great War that the Republic became united once again. The region, including the UMS, was divided on the course to take. During the Congress of Columbia, both the Republic and the UMS, and though they agreed against war in Europe, the tension nearly escalated into another war between them.

The Republic was not immune to the effects of the Economic Panic of 1922. Attempting to reform and industrialize the poorer regions of the nation, particularly in the south, these same regions grew disillusioned with the Republic. The leadership in MExico City also grew uncomfortable with the rise of the Grand Duchy of Central America into the Kingdom of Catrachia. The issues along the southern border culminated in the Chiapas War, wherein the Republic was defeated, and forced to cede the state of Chiapas to Catrachia.

Disbandment

The Republic was later accused of assassinating the President of the UMS, as war was declared. Facing a two front war, the Republic was defeated, with Antonio I of Catrachia occupying Mexico City. The Republic was dissolved in 1934, with the rise of the Second Mexican Empire.
