Mexico City

Mexico City is the capital and largest city of the Republic of Mexico, as well as the defunct Empire of Mexico. The city is found on the south-central part of the country in between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.

Government

The current government of Mexico is housed in the city, where it governs over the entire Republic.

Infrastructure

During the late Imperial and early Republic Eras, the city's infrastructure grew steadily, being inspired by the new architecture from Bonapartist Holland.

History

Mexico City has been inhabited since the time of the Aztecs. Under the name Technoctilan, the Aztecs ruled a vast empire before the arrival of European settlers.   The city gained prominence in the New World after the overthrow of the royalist government in 1820. There, the Empire of Mexico was declared with Vicente Guerrero being named Emperor. During the first Mexican Civil War, the city found infighting in the streets between supporters of the liberal Empire under Vicente and the conservative claimant Augustin Iturbide. Though no official battle took place, order was not restored until months after the signing of the peace deal.   In 1865, Mexico City became the center of the Republican Revolution that saw the execution of the royal family. Emperor Vicente II, Empress Maria, and their two eldest sons were executed in the central square by firing squad.   In 1867, the city was besieged and occupied by American forces, where they briefly installed Miguel Iturbide-Guerrero as the teenage Emperor of Mexico. During his own deposition, the presence of American troops prevented his execution and he was allowed to flee into exile.
