Queen's Party
The Queen's Party, or Partido de la Reina, was a coalition of politicians in the Kingdom of Peru.
History
Princess Sophia of America was inspired by what she had learned at the Seneca Falls Convention when she was a child with her mother and sister. She took the idea of women's rights to her adoptive homeland when she married King Francisco I of Peru. Even though women were barred from Peruvian politics, Sophia attempted to have a voice in governing.
Sophia grew to be concerned with the governing of her son, King John II. She utilized her position as the Queen Mother in order to bring together like minded politicians, particularly in the Royal Congress, in order to curve some of her son's more aggressive ideas. She also used her position in order to pass legislation to guarantee the education of her granddaughter, Princess Gabriela, that would otherwise be awarded to any male heir. Sophia eventually passed away in 1901, and the coalition was slowly pressured out of governing.
When Gabriela herself came to power, many of the politicians that had sided with her grandmother reformed the coalition. She used this voting block to pass Peru's agreement in the Congress of Columbia to declare neutrality during the Great War. However, opposition to this decision caused a brief coup and the Peruvian Civil War. When Gabriela was reinstalled, the Queen's Party became the largest voting block.
