Gabriela
Queen
Gabriela Camila Valentina was Queen Of Peru, the first Queen Regnant in the South America, and the second in the Americas after Victoria of Canada. As such, she faced much opposition from her male dominated cabinet due to her sex. During her reign, she oversaw Peru's's negotiations in the Congress of Columbia, and sought to keep her people out of the global conflict.
As the eldest of three daughters, Gabriela became heir presumptive from the time of her birth. Following her grandmother's insistence, she recieved an education due to her rank, despite her father's distant parenting. She excelled in her academics, but remained shunned from the royal court of the Peruvian elite. Despite her efforts, the public opinion remained skeptical of a woman's ability to lead.
In 1911, at the insistence of her father, Gabriela agreed to marry Prince Philip of Brazil son of Emperor Augusto I, in exchange for the territory of Acre.
Due to this distance, she remained ill equipped to rule at the beginning of her reign. She recieved encouragement from Queen Beatrice of America and Queen Josephine of Argentina, as well as drew inspiration from Queen Victoria of Great Britain. Through works of public service, she slowly gained the confidence of the Peruvian people.
Despite being the heir to the throne with no living male relatives, Gabriela faced significant resistance to her ascension. The law in Peru did not allow for women to inherit the throne. However, her father fought to amend the constitution to allow her to do so. Though John remained skeptical that she may be accepted, he did not wish to see the monarchy die out.
Gabriela ruled Peru with a dismay of the state of women's rights in the nation. Women were not able to vote, nor seek higher education.
Even though her dedication to neutrality to the Great War, many of the ministers and parliamentarians that were remnants of her father's warhawk style of governing opposed this. In the political turmoil, Gabriela attempted to dismiss the cabinet. However, the Prime Minister declared the monarchy dissolved and attempted to overthrow the queen. Gabriela escaped the capital and fled to Callao, organizing an opposing government and beginning the Peruvian Civil War. In order to gain overwhelming support, The combined forces marched back to Lima and seized control in 1920.
Following the civil war, Gabriela took back the power of royal proclaimation her father surrendered, and appointed a new government that alligned with her goals.
