The Gutted Fish Alehouse
Sitting squarely in the dockyard district, the four-story Gutted Fish alehouse is a favorite spot for the sailors and dockworkers who operate in Whiteport, and is unmistakable given its odd design, being built from the reconstituted holk of Captain Nelson Farragut's old ship. The gutted fish is known for its lively atmosphere, and is active virtually all hours of day and night as sailors come and go and carouse. While not known for being particularly comfortable, the Gutted fish offers a place to sleep on dry land, passable food, strong drinks, and enough activity to entertain endlessly, and is run by the eccentric and animated retired Captain Farragut, who keeps his establishment running ship-shape.
Purpose / Function
The Gutted Fish Alehouse proudly serves as the main port of call for the dockworkers, fishermen, sailors, and shipwrights who call Whiteport home. It offers meager lodgings (a hammock to sleep in) and passable food, as well as strong drinks and a lively atmosphere in which recently returned sailors and fishermen swap stories about the one that got away, sing sea shanties, and generally bluster, brawl, and drink away their pay until the time comes to head back out to sea.
It also serves as an ongoing home for Captain Farragut's crewmen, and he maintains a standing offer of employment to any of his hold crewmen who should need it (or on occasion those down on their-luck sailors who wash up on his doorstep seeking a place to turn to), and as a Farragut's personal shrine to the mariners who served during the Terror and as a makeshift place of worship for followers of the sea goddess.
Alterations
The Gutted Fish Alehouse was built out of Captain Nelson's old ship, the Heartfin, and bears many of the scars from her time at sea. The outer walls of the tavern have clearly been scrubbed of barnacles and weathering, and in some places the wood seems charred, splintered, split, or warped, but otherwise the building is clearly the overturned hulk of the Captain's ship, generally unchanged from its time at sea, although the ship's Sailfin figurehead has been removed and now hangs over the door.
Architecture
The building itself is essentially an overturned hull, retaining its portholes as windows, although with the portions cut away. The top floor (previously the ballast-hold of the ship) offers the most spacious rooms, with portions of the hull cut away to offer seaside views, while the upper two decks of the ship serve as additional rooms (the third floor offers private single rooms, while the second floor offers common lodgings. The ships' masts and superstructure have been converted to serve as support beams and kitchen and walk-up bar, with some seating but featuring a large open air beer garden sheltered by what was once the top deck.
History
The Gutted Fish was previously the Heartfin, the pride of Captain Nelson Farragut's career and his investment. Captain Farragut's proud career with Whiteport's admiralty was brought to a close shortly after the terror, when he was badly injured in they fighting and his ship seriously damaged. Forced to retire by Whiteport's senior admiralty on account of his injury, being forced to sit idly by as his beloved ship the Heartfin was set to be decommissioned and sent to the scrapyard to be stripped (as he felt he was), Captain Farragut (with help from a few fellow retired crewmen and a public interest campaign from benevolent citizens looking to help the city's veterans) was given leave to purchase the ship from the admiralty and repurpose it.
With help from his remaining loyal crew, Farragut converted the Gutted Fish into an alehouse which serves both as a reputable and popular tavern and inn for Whiteport's maritime community, as well as an employment project for some of Whiteport's injured and wounded sailors.
