Wōdenwood

The Wōdenwood, or Wodenwood, is the ancient forest that covers most of Brainey, and is the primary home of the Skywood trees. This great feature of the region is symbol of the Briane and they will lay down their lives, homes, and possessions to protect this sacred woodland.

Geography

Underneath the canopy, the Wōdenwood is rugged and hilly, with many high and low rises in the terrain. With the Allfire Peaks on the forest’s southern border, this shouldn’t come as a surprise. The surrounding area is mostly steppe grasslands, intermixed with a few swampy marshes and moors.   The only major water source of note in the forest is the Ælen River, which cuts right through the forest. This river has several tributaries that twist and turn through the woods and feed several swamps within the forest. This river is also the easiest way to travel through the forest, as the rugged terrain makes travel difficult.

Fauna & Flora

The most notable of the organism inhabiting the Wōdenwood are the Skywood trees, the dominant tree in the forest. Nowhere else on the continent do the massive conifer trees grow in such density, leaving little room for any other type of tree. These trees grow hundreds of feet tall, and have wood as hard as stone. Other conifers of the forest include cedar, pine, fir, and spruce, and the birch and oak trees are the only deciduous trees eking out a living in these woods. Ground plants aren’t incredibly common aside from ferns, as is to be expected when little light gets through the great canopy, but they are around. Flowering plants are not too common, with exception being the Ælen Blossom   The fauna of the Wōdenwood is invariably cold weather adapted. The common animals include deer, boar, squirrels, rabbits, foxes, lynxes, wolves, bears, and beavers. The species of beaver is unique to the forest, specially adapted for the Skywood trees that are so common in the region. More extravagant inhabitants include the Giant known as the fir bolg and the primates known as trolls. The fir bolg are the massive browsers of the forest, wondering in family groups that feed off the branches no other animals can reach. Trolls are among the top predators that live in the swamps and on the outskirts of the forest, feeding of the plentiful nerds of bison that inhabit the grasslands and forest edges, as well.

Natural Resources

The Wōdenwood’s primary resource is, unsprisingly, lumber: specifically lumber from the Skywood trees. Skywood is renouned for its durability, thus making the Wōdenwood a highly sought after location. That is not to say it is the only lumber harvested, as oak, spruce, and fir trees are also common.   Beyond that there are a few suitable place within the forest for mines, were ores and minerals are gathered. Mostly these are iron mines or granite quarries, but there are a few quarries where Foch, a valuable type of stone, is mined. The Ælen River also makes for a suitable fishing grounds, as it is used as an oceanic highway by massive, oceanic fish such as salmon and sturgeon. Fur is also a valuable resource, due to the abundance of wooly animals.
